Hi all!
I'm used to working three 12s, so working two 12s and two 8s will be new for me. For those of you who work a similiar schedule, how do you try to schedule yourself so that you're not exhausted and can get the most days off, especially using PTO? I know scheduling depends on the unit's needs, individual preferences, and seniority, but I just need some ideas as I don't want to experience burnout so quickly. Plus I frequent the gym 4 times a week and would like to train for a marathon next year. Thanks!

We only do 12's at my facility. I always do mine all in a row - it really isn't as bad as some think it is. When I do it that way, I have 4-5 days off in a row, usually. We also do self-scheduling and everyone pretty much stays to their schedule so there are hardly any conflicts. Once in awhile our manager may stick us on a day we didn't pencil ourselves in but it isn't a big deal.

I'd probably do one of the following:
12, 8, off, 12, 8, off, off
or
12, 8, 8, off, 12, off off.
I don't know if I could do 4 days in a row, but that's an option too. I'd probably group the 12's together so that I have shorter shifts when I am more tired.

If you've got some flexiblity, try one schedule for a couple weeks and then switch to something that suits you better.
