Twelve Hour Nights or M-F

Updated:   Published

OK so I am in running for a M-F 8-430 position, the type you actually get out at that time. No nights weekends or holidays (13 of them).

Currently work 12hr nights with an 8 hr in there along the way and mandating usually 1/month. Love the job and the patients. Hate the management games. Working every Friday night and been placed on schedule every holiday.....we don't have a "rotation" or "assigned" holidays...

As an OR RN at a Regional Medical Center in NY, I worked 3-11, M-F.  We were also on 11-7 call once weekly, & a full 24hr weekend call every 6 weeks.  When hubby had an opportunity to move to Albany for his job as a Neuropsychologist, off we went.  I got a job at an Ortho Ambulatory Surgery Center, & what a joy it was!  M-F, 7-3:30: no nights, weekends, or holidays!!  There were many times 1 or 2 surgery cases ran over, but I always took the OT for anyone who couldn't stay with their assigned OR - we had no kids at home anymore, & hubby was always late, anyway.
So to answer your simple query: take the M-F straight hours!  No-brainer!! ?

I have worked every shift and hour combo possible since becoming a nurse so my perspective is broad although my situation may not align with yours. My current job is M-F 0730-1600. No weekends, no holidays (including federal) and no call. Despite it being a PITA to get to appointments during normal business hours I get more done in the hours I have after work than I ever did when I worked longer hours and needed an entire day to recover. I have quite a bit of vacation so I schedule a day off here or there for a break in the monotony.

Hello

I know it's not for everyone, however I love it! I worked in the hospital setting most of my career (28 years).  Critical care/ICU is my specialty.  I worked nights, Fri, Sat, and Sunday with really no option to switch. I recently left the hospital for an outpatient ambulatory surgery center, which is privately owned. M-F, no nights, no holidays, and no weekends!  I just met my 90 days!  Best decision I could have made . Sometimes we work 10-12 hour days, however, on days when there are no patients we leave early. I thought I would miss my four days off in a row, I do not. Also, working for a small privately owned establishment has its perks!
Good luck!

I am currently working M-F 8-5 job and have done this for the last 11 years. I did take a $5.00 pay cut in addition to shift diff/holiday pay when I left the bedside 11 years ago. I feel like the pay cut was an even trade not to have to ruin my health working 12 hours with on call that required me to work 16 hours or work a night shift when I was working day shift. I did not miss the shift differential or holiday pay at all. I have no regrets leaving the bedside for M-f work.

I just came back to a M-F with no holidays job and already miss my 12s. I miss the  frequent MTW one week and WThF the next week schedule. I never minded working a holiday rotation or the occasional weekend, although we had weekend shift people and didn't have to do a lot of weekends.

Having said that... your current employer doesn't sound like they are giving you much respect, and I definitely wouldn't stay in a situation like that. There are a lot of great employers in my area so that just wouldn't be tolerated.
