Hello all :)
I will be relocating from Mississippi to Tuscaloosa Al in the next few months, can anyone tell me of some of the nicer places to work ? I am interested in pay, nurse/pt ratio and benefits and also any facilities that offer daycare. I am an Rn with 1 yr. nursing home supervisory exp. and I also worked 3 yrs as an LPN on a SNF /Rehab and Med/Surg unit. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

There are 2 hospitals in Tuscaloosa within 3-4 miles of each other. Both hospitals are owned by the same company. The smaller of the 2 (Northport) is less political and the people are very friendly. The same areas of practice are not offered in both hospitals though. The hospials have contracts with several daycares in which employees get a discount on services. It really would depend on your area that you were interested in to choose a hospital.

for what it is worth to you....
both cities are growing cities. i strongly recommend Tuscaloosa as a great place to raise a family. i am not a nurse yet and i have never worked in any health care setting so i do not know anything about if dch or any hospitals offer on site daycare.
if u wind up seeking daycare off the hospital's campus then i would look for a program with a curriculum like abecca. my child went to Open Door in northport (big church , mixed ethnic background, very polite loving sweet teachers. its also has a school through the 12th grade) and Christian Community Learning Center( primarily African American students, wonderful polite, sweet, loving SMART teachers- particularly Mrs. Slater who teaches the children Spanish and the director, Mrs Sutton, ( a former teacher)who made sure her graduating children could read before they graduate from pre school and would send all the 4-5 yr old children home with spelling flash cards to practice almost each night. I went to Rose Towers ( University of AL's on campus daycare and part of a co ed dorm) as a child because one of my parent's worked at the UA and the other was a student at the UA. if you go back to school anytime soon this may be an option for u and your family if u attend the UA.
Also, housing can cost you a pretty penny too. Lots of people r moving to the eastside of Tuscaloosa. Sadly, the town is quite divided as far as housing in concerned. As a result, even in this day in time, many of the schools in the city are still segregated to a degree. you will see almost only one race in the high schools on different parts of town .
Tuscaloosa's crime is not like New York or other big city's crime. I personally feel safe raising a family almost anywhere in Tuscaloosa. If you r looking for a very very nice apartment complex you might want to look at Inverness apartments. they are pricey but you get what you pay for because they are nice. they are not next to any hospitals and the traffic is quite congested in the morning, however is right on a main highway.
a great elementary school is woodland Forrest. the staff is great and they have an after school/extended day program right in the school when the school gets out. a lot of students in the 35405 zip go there. they have a program called enrichment for gifted students to participate in. I was in this program for a few years. it was so cool and interesting!
be aware of your children's curriculum's as they get high school age. back when i went to school they did not have a very strict or tough standards for graduation. i think the highest math i took in high school was alga 2 and as a result, when i went o college i didn't do too hot in colg alg because i was ill prepared.
anyhoot, i wish u the best and i think u will be very happy in t town or northport!
ps- did i mention that you should not go to the grocery store on game days? get a mini football schedule and put it on your fridge. it once took me an hour to travel 15 miles in Tuscaloosa on game day. oh and by the way there are tons of gyms to join but the cheapest way to get exercise and have family fun is to go to the quad on the UA campus. its huge and littered with joggers, people walking their dogs & taking their babies for a stroll and students goofing around playing football. There is also a Chucky Cheese in a shopping center past University Mall and C.H.O.M-children's hand's on museum somewhere downtown i think unless they have closed down. ( there are two malls pratically down the street from each other) If I had to choose a bank outside of a credit union it would be Regions because it is everywhere in Tuscaloosa and N'port which may prove to be convenient. Not to mention they just merged with Amsouth.

Wow, that last post was intensive! Anyway, I work at the "BIG" hospital in Tuscaloosa. The biggest difference in the hospitals is size. At Northport, they have a good OB/GYN, Psych, and Rehab area so if you are into that type of nursing, this would probably be the best place for you. The big hospital offers many other options for employment. There are 4 ICU's: Trauma/Surgical ICU, Open Heart ICU, Cardiac ICU, and MICU. There is a large Cath Lab, also. Of Course there is the many MEd/Surg floors. I would probably go to their webpage and check everything out. It is DCH Health Systems.
Hope this helps and good luck!
sorry for the information overload. :)
i too have moved to a new town before in the name of getting a larger paycheck.
i know that the decisive factor in making a decision on whether or not to move goes beyond finding out if your employer has free parking. you also have to secure safe housing for you and your family. here is alabama's sex offender site where you can see what registered sex offenders live in the zip you are planning to move into:

it would behoove you to think about the school zone you live in unless you don't mind there being a window of opportunity for your baby to go to a lousy school once they are become school age. you could always check with tuscaloosa's board of education for test statistics to know which school has students who are doing well and which schools are on track to have their children graduate from high school without knowing how to add 2 plus 2.
good luck
