Hello everyone, I am Kim. I am considering moving from Washington, DC to the OK area. I am not sure of which is the best area to live in. i have two kids and my neice that i will be moving with. I willneed daycare, school, and summer activites for them to do. i am moving out that way to attend Platt College for the LPN-RN bridge program. If thier is anyone out ther that can give me some info on these areas i would gladly appreciate it or some websites.

From what I can see I've heard alot of bad about Platt. Does anyone have something to tell me on them. I have heard alot about TCC, I'm assuming that stands for Tulsa community College. I will research that too when I leave this website.

I also hear that they don't make alot of money in OK. Iam a LPN at a DR's Office througha contract ageny but I make $23.83 and I work at a LTC and i make $20.00. And you guys RN make less than that WOW!!!!!!!

They don't have any fast track RN schools out here like the one at Platt. So thats why I'm moving and was considering staying out west but with pay like that I don't know. Anyways if ANYONE can give me iany nfo on these area than thanks a bunch. You can either PM me here

PLATT is no good and do you really wanna pay 25000.00 to get your rn have you checked for online programs??

Why do you say its no good? I have checked there aren't many online schools where you obtain your ASN.

Nurses here may make less than what you're used to seeing, but you have to factor in the cost of living adjustment. It is a LOT cheaper here for housing, day care, etc than in Washington DC.

I've lived in both Tulsa and the OKC metro and I liked both.

Sorry I can't help you with Platt though...I don't know anything about that.

Well of course we make less here, the cost of living in OKC compared to Washington DC is beyond cheaper. Most of the RN's I know here are doing pretty darn good!

Hmm, I personally wouldn't even consider Platt. I have talked to sooo many students and they have basically nothing good to say about the program.

I live in the OKC area and the best schools around here are (in no particular order): University of Central Oklahoma, OSU-OKC, OCCC, Rose State and University of Oklahoma as far as state schools go.

Norman is an excellent place to live and has good schools for children. OKC public schools are basically crap (I know I live in OKC--a lot of the OKC teachers will tell you how bad it is), Edmond has good schools and Moore has good schools. Since you have kids that is important to know. We have a lot of good private schools as well.

Oklahoma is a wonderful place to live, the people are great here! I've lived all over the US and overseas and this is a great place to raise a family ;)

Some things I would want to consider when trying to figure out where I wanted to move would be:

  1. When can I begin practicing as an LPN in the new location (isn't it true that states do not all accept licensure from all other states?)? Will I have to spend time and money getting another license?
  2. When can I start school in the new location vs staying where I am currently living. If there is a difference of only 2 months I would consider staying where I am.
  3. What are the costs of schooling in the new location vs staying where I am currently living
  4. Do I have any support systems where I currently live (friends, family) I will be giving up to move
  5. What are the costs of moving (this can be significant)
  6. What are my motivations for moving (better atmosphere for the family, cost of living, to escape a bad situation, etc.)
  7. Actually apply to schools to see where and when I can get in
  8. How much more is having an RN going to get me? Is it worth the cost of moving, out of state tuition, etc.

Applying for nursing schools can be a dizzying prospect and it has so many factors that make it complex. It is not like saying: I want to be a surg-tech and in this amount of time I will be finished. I know personally when I made the decision to go into nursing 2 years ago I had a rude awakening to find out that I wasn't going to get into to an RN program in the fall of that year. I wanted to go into nursing and I wanted to do it now. I was/am very impatient about the process but I try (don't always succeed) to be positive about it.

Oklahoma is a great place to live. I live in the Tulsa area and like it here very much. Think long and hard about why you want to move. Moving is a big life change in and of itself and add starting school on top of that and you have even more change to deal with. You may be better off in the short term staying where you are. You can make $20 -$32 as an LPN working agency (so says an ad in the Tulsa World) and our cost of living is far lower than DC.

Best of luck to you in your decision.

Platt College is concerned about 1 thing 25000.00 dollars they do not care if a family member dies or you are in the hospital, you child is in the hospital, if you miss you 85% on attendence you will be dropped, no ? asked, if you have a 76.9 and the required is a 77% some students will get the round up, others not so much, Clinicals: If your instructor has to say go on vacation, and they do not have some one to take thier spot and you miss clinicals, you have to make them up on your own time. although the instructor was the one on vacation you are responsible for the make up. thats just a few examples of why platt is NO GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!

I guess ...I dont really care what kind of reputation Platt has. to me it is just a school where I can get my LPN/RN and I am out of there. They are OK.state board approved so thats fine with me ..if oklahoma thinks there good enough to approve I will go with that...that is just me...now my kids attend the OKC PUBLIC schools and I dont think they are crap...we still have teachers here teaching so it is good enough for me...no school is perfect. every one has there own opinion..and PLATT has been around since 1979 so they must not be that bad! I will learn more working as an LPN/RN than being a LPN/RN student no matter what school I choose! I will be starting PLATT this spring and when I graduate and I am working as a nurse than maybe I will be on here discourging people from platt....or maybe I will be saying how great PLATT was ...thats me!

$19,500 is pretty expsensive for an ADN degree. My BSN isn't even costing that much and has a NCLEX passing rate of 94%. The OKC Platt RN program has only been around since 2005 not 1979. The last posted NCLEX passing rate (2006) is 69% which is far below the national average of 88% (which is still pretty low). 69% is not good at all. I got that from the Oklahoma BON website.

Platt has a bad reputation for a reason (and has for years with their other programs) and the OP should certainly take that into account before spending that much money for a school with a low pass rate last year. I've known people who have went to Platt for all sorts of their programs and each and every one of them will tell you about how they only care about the money, and how dissapointed they were.

The Tulsa Platt NCLEX rate for '06 was 68% from the Oklahoma BON website.

There are some really good RN (and LPN) programs here in Oklahoma with good pass rates above the national average so for the OP please take your time to really research some of these schools before you make the big move and spend a lot of money, you do want an excellent program when your talking about something like Nursing.

Nursing school and moving from another state to attend nursing school is a big deal. You don't (my god please) just want the fastest, easiest program when your talking about being a nurse, this is serious buisness and you want a good, strong background in nursing from a good school. People here know what the good schools are and that is why they are harder to get into and have good pass and retention rates!

I would like to thank you all for all of your infomation.I live in Washington,DC and over here on the East Coast there is only one-two scholls that you as a LPN can finish in less than 18 months not having any prereq's. I am willing to move because I don't really have time to go to school for 2 1/2 plus years to school over here. So that is why I started this thred to see how it would be possible to move west coast and make it. Again thanks to all that have replied and all that will reply.
