Tucson PCC Students~

U.S.A. Arizona

I heard the old director is out? Is this true?

Is there even anybody from PCC on these boards? Anybody from Tucson?????

I've decided to go to UofA for my BSN because of Pima's wait. It'll be hard to be in the starving student mode for so long but I think it's for the best. It'll be so much easier to get the BSN done with all at once rather than doing an RN to BSN program while working.

Do you know what the average GPA is for UofA's nursing students? Even if you've heard anything, I would appreciate it. It is a smidgen unnerving to choose a path where I may not get accepted into UofA. With Pima, if I do the pre-reqs and waaaaaaaaaait I'll get in. But I think it'll be ok.

So, if I were to take all the required pre-reqs, about how long does it take to get into the University? I wouldn't be aganist going straight for my BSN.

I have not decided yet, but I am leaning toward NAU. The place I work has an onsite RN to BSN program thru Grand Canyon, but that will mean signing another contract. I love where I work, but I think it might feel better doing it on my own. My plan is to start my BSN next August. Hopefully by then I will feel more comfortable in my role as a nurse!!

The UofA BSN program has no wait list. You apply for admission after meeting certain requirements and you must have all your pre-reqs completed before you start the nursing program. They choose the top students by GPA, interview and recommendations. I'm trying to find out the average GPA of accepted students. Arizona.edu has all the pre-req and admission info. Click on college of nursing.

I am not exactly sure, but I do know that to get into the U of A you have to have the Nutrition class with a lab, College Algebra, Writing, a language class, and something in the arts catagory. I know it sounds like a lot, but it is worth it. Everyone considering nursing in Tucson would do well to have Spanish. If you grew up here taking high school spanish, take Spa 101, even though it will be easy...it is an easy credit. And don't get overwhelmed looking at the whole picture...Nursing school is all about one step at a time. If you try to look into the future, it is over whelming. There is one other option, Carondelet, TMC, and the VA are all offering their staff on site ASN programs. The catch is that you have to agree to work for them while you are in school and two years after you get out. But hey, almost all of them have you sign a contract when you get hired. So why not take advantage of it..

I want to get started on it as well. I only have tuition reimbursement at my work and Grand Canyon is pretty pricey! My firend is doing NAU, but it sounds weird. She said you have to find people to sign you off on clinical work??? I don't know. I wanted to start the BSN program ASAP. I'm having nursing school withdrawl!

Thanks for the help ladies. It's all so new to me [college] so I have tons of questions. Trying to figure out which is the best route for me to go.

Now, how does it work transferring to the UofA from PCC? Do I just take all the pre-reqs for the Assoc at Pima, then transfer to the U and take those pre-reqs before applying to the Nursing school at the U?

Hope that made sense, lol.

I love it! NS withdrawal. :rotfl:

Have you checked into the University of Wyoming's RN to BSN online program? They seem to be the least expensive and I've heard good things about their program. Last time I checked, it's only $85 per credit hour. If you have a cumulative cap on your tuition reimbursement this could help. Maybe something to look into. I didn't vet the info in great depth so I only know the basics.

If you are going to plan on applying at UofA you need to meet the UofA's admission and prereq requirements. They are different than Pima's. For example, I took Bio 156 for Pima's ADN and now that I've switched to prereqs for UofA, I have to take Bio 181 since they don't take Bio 156.

Make sure you meet with an advisor at Pima. They can answer your questions about Pima's program and also UofA. I'd also meet with an advisor at UofA. You don't want to make a mistake in your course schedule and take something you don't need or get behind because you missed a class or the sequence is off.

Will do! Thank you!

Remi Soto is a good advisor at the west campus. I think you can probably trust what she says. I've heard rather unfortunate things about a few of the advisors. You know, giving out incorrect info and messing students up for a semester.

Thing is, I'd figure it out myself by spending a loooong time poring over the catalogues and websites and then I'd double check in sneeky ways. But that is neurotic me. You know how frustrating it is to get different answers from different people?

Yeah, it isnt good when you get different answers. Especially when it can hold you back. Time is precious, at least to me it is.

Hey AZ - I just graduated from the UofA this last May. When I was accepted I had a 3.8 gpa. I took all my prereqs at Pima - and I also took the accelerated BIO 201 and BIO 202. Personally I am very glad I did this. The teachers at Pima were great. If you decide on the UofA you will also have to take an additional Chemistry class (Organic Chem - Chem 140) - now I admit - things may have changed since I was accepted. But those were the requirements when I started.

I have a previous degree so I wasn't hassled with all the writing, language, etc. etc. etc. I also want to mention that since I was accepted the competition to get in the UofA is great. Last semester only 1 out of every 5 applicants were accepted. Regardless, by going one more semester you will have your BSN. Total cost (not including books) was a little over $12,000.00.

There were some very good instructors but on the whole they were not all that helpful. Alot of it will depend on you. Usually you can expect at least 3 tests per class per semester which cover a lot of materal and a lot of writing. Expect to become very familiar with APA. My best advice if you get accepted is to find a good study group. The person who told you to take it one step at a time gave you some very good advice. I wish you the best of luck!
