Trying to relocate...cluelessly!

Nurses General Nursing

I've been a long term care agency nurse for 8 years and my daughter is a CNA. We are looking at relocating to NY state. Can anybody guide us on where to look for agency positions? Do they use alot of agency out there...( I want to get at least a full time paycheck). Is there an area in the state we should be looking ( not near NYC ). What are the pay rates like? Sorry to ask so many questions at once but we're trying to find out as much as we can. Thank you and God bless.

any idea about where in NY?

We're not really sure yet. We know that we'd like to stay away from living in the bigger cities. We don't mind working there, I just want a smaller town for the kids. We are interested in going there because of housing prices. We do have family near Rochester and on the PA border but that's not really a factor in our relocation. We're currently google searching areas.

How much agency nursing is used vs in-house depends on the hospital or facility. Kinda wide ranges in salaries, too; the closer you are to the metro areas, the higher, of course. New RN grads in hospitals get typically $22-$28 to start; again, it varies alot, plus of course with experience, differentials, whether union or not. LPNs aren't being hired much in hospitals but ARE being utilized in LTC. LPNs, when they are hired, are much lower than RN wages (blanket statement, but the norm). Salaries in LTC can be quite nice, but then again, it's hard to keep staff in most of them, from what I've heard.

I'd suggest posting this same request on the board for NY Nurses. Goodluck!

One more note: you mentioned wanting to relocate to NYS because of housing prices, but please do your homework carefully: many beautiful small-town areas, where housing can best be afforded, also pay the least in salary (makes sense, no?). The closer you get to where the money is, the higher the housing costs typically go. NYS is also insane where taxes are concerned....do your research carefully!

NY State is gorgeous! But one thing to watch out for: property taxes.

As a former FL realtor, I worked with plenty of NY'ers from all over the state and heard many stories of well paid professionals no longer able to afford their house payments due to rising property taxes.

Just Google the county of whatever town you're interested in, many of this have a tax estimator feature on their website. Or call them and ask them the approximate yearly taxes for a house price.

Best of luck in your move!

Why do you want to move to NY?

They will tax you to death.

Well, in defense of NYS, I will say that I've lived in various parts of it all my life. I've traveled over a good portion of the rest of the country, and other countries, and always came back here :)

The taxes can be awful. But that's a con, with many, many pros!
