Trying to keep me off the floor (nursing home).

I was one of the only RNs who worked the floor. Lately, they have taken me off the floor and I'm either sitting in the office writing monthly summaries or doing some QA assignment or shuffling papers or checking MAR records...I asked why I'm not being put on the floor and they said the corporate office does not want RNs passing meds but supervising and doing administrative tasks.

I actually liked passing meds and working on the floor. To be honest, I think there are way too many nurses being wasted doing office work at this place (about 4+me=5).

What irks me even more is that while I'm rotting in a back office they are recruiting and hiring LPNs to cover the floor, when they have a competent and willing RN who would like to do it. Even when there is a call in, they will rarely allow me to take the floor and will try to find an LPN to cover. This is terribly frustrating. I miss interacting with the CNAs and residents. I miss feeling like I've actually done something. I will look down at what I'm doing and think, this place could function just fine without me doing this crap.

Is this something unique to this one company?

Good grief, I hope it's only where you work. I love being on the floor, although I do wish at times I could give more input on management/decision making side of things. I'm a charge nurse, but at my facility this means I will also be responsible for a wing.

We actually have more RN's now than they've had in about 10 years. I think we have 5-6 that regularly work the floor.

It is different then our company. They WANT more RN's on the floor, they are actually 'encouraging' our LPN's to go back to school to get their RN. I just changed to NOC shift because they wanted an RN in the building at noc. But, being the RN in the building (only nurse) I have my own paperwork to do, med sheets, POS's, infection control you get the idea. But I also do med pass and assessments. The way i'm understanding it at my place they are going to do all they can to hire RN's as the LPN's leave.

sue's is right , BSN's they keep us in mangement.. but i work for a hospital so i work the floor and take care of patients like all the RN's , we even have MSN's working the floor.. i do management when i have to fill in for someone , but other than that i am on the floor working... maybe you should get into a hospital?
