Trump Targets Efforts to Desegregate U.S. Suburbs

Targeting HUD’s Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing rule, the president said on Twitter that enforcing housing desegregation would have a “devastating impact.”

President Donald Trump on Tuesday said he would reverse a federal rule that promotes fair housing and sets desegregation as a national priority...

In 2009 I had to have electronic fingerprints done to renew my RN license. The man who did it asked me if I wanted to see my FBI file. I didn't know I had one, but there it was on his screen. A one page black and white photo of my grandma and me holding signs reading "FAIR HOUSING" in front of an upscale Los Feliz neighborhood real estate sign that read, "FOR SALE to WHITE CHRISTIANS ONLY!"

Just a few years later I read in the paper that a young Black attorney named Johnny Cochran had purchased a house in that same neighborhood.

My husbands parents built our suburban Philly home in 1950,; Low income section was developed for GI's returning from WWII remains, families improved over the years, remain starter homes. Our working class area now integrating, property reassessed this year by county -tax assessment doubled.

Julian Castro, former HUD Secretary's response to Trump:

Quote

It was the last major piece of Civil Rights legislation. The Fair Housing Act required local communities to desegregate, to undo government policies that encouraged segregation -- post-WWII policies like the GI Bill that gave preference to white homebuyers in the new suburbs....

...How do we know that fair housing still matters? Strong data. The economists Raj Chetty and Nathaniel Hendren have produced important analyses of how critical a child's zip code is to her future. http://equality-of-opportunity.org/neighborhoods/...

Leading Civil Rights & Housing Groups Condemn President’s Effort to Gut Fair Housing, Use of Incendiary Racial Rhetoric for Political Gain July 23, 2020

Today, a coalition of civil rights, affordable housing and consumer advocacy organizations condemned the move by the Trump administration to eliminate a critical tool for addressing systemic racism and segregation in our communities.

In its haste to undermine this central component of the Fair Housing Act, the administration has done an end run around the normal rulemaking process and adopted a new Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing (AFFH) rule by executive fiat...
... Under the Trump administration, HUD suspended the AFFH regulations finalized in 2015 – effectively gutting the only meaningful guidance since the Fair Housing Act for how states and localities should correct discriminatory housing practices and undo the harms caused by racial segregation, housing discrimination and disinvestment. Today’s action by the president is the administration’s latest effort to thwart access to fair housing and to perpetuate segregation.

The coalition call on him to rescind this mandate and reinstate the 2015 AFFH regulation.

We live in a house built in 1932 as a WPA project. When we first moved here in 1969 several of the original owners were our neighbors. One man told us, "Me and Charlie built your house."

This was an integrated neighborhood from the beginning. Two original families are our neighbors now. One is a really kind Black veteran whose parents were the original owners. His wife is Korean American. He is a volunteer at the VA.

Next door to them is the granddaughter of the original owner, her ER physician husband, and three school-age kids. Across the street are a Mexican American family whose family bought their house new. We are blessed with good neighbors and mostly nice weather.

How The U.S. Government Segregated America

In 1933, faced with a housing shortage, the federal government began a program explicitly designed to increase — and segregate — America's housing stock. Author Richard Rothstein says the housing programs begun under the New Deal were tantamount to a "state-sponsored system of segregation."…
