True story when I was in high school

Published

I was a teacher for a long time and just passed my RN boards in August. I'm cruising around on here and just remembered something that happened to me when I was in high school in the late 80's. I think I was a Senior so the 1988-1989 school year.

I didn't fell well and went to the Nurse. She was out of her office so I went to the Secretary who put me in the little room with the cots to lie down as the Nurse's office was able to be accessed via the Main office. I was laying there when the Nurse walked into her office and didn't check the little room before she called a parent regarding their pregnant daughter! Apparently, the student told the Nurse that her parents knew she was pregnant but they didn't until the Nurse told them!! I felt so bad for the Nurse- and the parents!!

I was laying horrified that I heard this so I slipped onto the floor and crawled out on my hands and knees through the Secretaries area to escape.

(It gets a little fuzzy here as I was in utter shock and it was over 25 years ago!!)

I don't recall getting caught crawling so I think that I made it to the sitting area on the other side of the counter and stood up as I recall asking one of the Secretaries that I overheard something by the Nurse that I should not have and should I let her know? She said that I should but I did not.

I didn't want to get the nurse in trouble and I didn't want the student to know that I knew in case the rumors started flying and she would blame me! She was a rough girl with rough friends and I was scared! I never told anyone what I heard! Not my best friend not my boyfriend not my mom. I knew that it was opening a can of worms. I knew the Secretary could tell the Nurse a student overheard something but if she did the Nurse never talked to me about it. I now wonder if the Secretary wasn't supposed to stick kids in there in the first place and she was covering her butt.

If that happened today and I gossiped how I heard about the pregnancy got out or even if I just let the Nurse know I knew she would have to report it, I don't even want to think about the firestorm that would occur. It is entirely possible that there would be a lawsuit for millions and the parents would win and/or the Nurse and maybe the Secretary would get fired.

I'm sorry, but the best part of this was you crawling out. I can't stop laughing.

I know!!!! It was like a scene from a movie!!

Also, I meant feel well NOT fell well!!!!!

You were a very smart young lady and demonstrated what I would call great discernment and discretion. That shows a great deal of character imo which is rare. The nurse, the secretary and the student are very lucky that you were mature beyond your years and chose to protect the people involved instead of blabbing the gossip to anyone who would listen. You should be very proud of yourself.
