Hello everybody.
Question for everybody: True or False
Nursing school can only teach you so much, that's why it's important to find a job that will continue to build on that foundation starting with some sort of orientation or at least a supportive staff.
Thoughts?
I'd also encourage new people to compare their mental image of a "supportive environment" with some research on the gamut of experiences new grads have (allnurses is a great place to do that). I wish that every facility had the time, money and a group of preceptors or peers tasked with orienting new people who love to teach, but the truth is sometimes supportive is pretty bare bones and may consist of people who aren't trying to actively sabotage you, and who might be busy or short-staffed themselves.
I'm in no way excusing toxic behavior. I've had a couple of jobs with that type of environment and the only cure was to get outta there ASAP. It's just that not every one word reply to a question or a gruff tone qualifies - don't give up what may be the right job through misinterpreting a situation as unsupportive when it just may be behavior caused by influences you aren't aware of yet.

Your nurse school education is the mere start of your education. It keeps on till you retire or die.
