Trent University Compressed Nursing 2016

World Canada CA Programs

Published

Hi everyone,

It's that time of year again! I have applied to Trent University's compressed nursing program for Fall 2016. We can share admissions/GPA information here to help each other out! My cGPA is 76% & the chances seem very slim considering the cut-off of high 70s.

Goodluck to everyone going through this stressful process!

Hi there,

I have applied to the compressed program as well and already graduated from trent with a BSc in biology. Just wondering if WA means waitlisted? ....my home page still says trent is evaluating my application....anyone else still waiting to hear back ?

Hi knf16 mine says the same thing....I think WA means Waiting Admission

It's going well so far. The course load is definitely doable. I had some transfer credits so in my first semester I only had to take 4 courses, and this semester I had 5. Some people only had 3 courses last term, and 4 this term and have been working on the side. Trent is very good with transfer credits. The only thing I don't like is how some of the courses are structured, and how reading-intensive some of them are. For example, I have taken two nursing courses that had microbiology, pharmacology, and nutrition combined into one. I felt like it was a lot of work, personally. It is manageable though. I like the way the weekly schedules are like (depending on how you arrange your lectures, seminars, and labs). For both semesters, I had to be on campus only twice a week! I decided to drive from home, about an hour away. Unfortunately the labs and clinical placement I find don't connect too well with the nursing theory courses as of yet. The theory courses are extremely dry, and the essays are worth 30% each. I wish there was a greater emphasis on the "hands on" aspect of things. As for the nursing admin, they're generally very supportive and approachable. There are clubs (i.e. rowing) and a welcome week, but since I commute, I don't partake that often. I think the program is decent, but is was a change for me coming here from a research-intensive university where I got my first degree. Any more questions, let me know!

Hi, I know this is a month old now, but I just had a question about your transfer credits. I got accepted to Trent back in February and I'll probably be going there this fall (still deciding between schools). I'm coming from a degree at Brock in Medical Sciences, so I will probably have a couple transfer credits. Do you know if it's possible to use these to shorten the program from the 28 months? For example, in my first term I probably won't need to take intro bio or chem. Would I be able to instead fill those spaces with courses required for second term (and then in second term, take courses that would be required in third term, etc.)? Or do I have to stick to the schedule and just end up with a slightly lesser course load where I have transfer credits?

I hope that makes sense... I was accepted to Western and Queens as well for the accelerated programs, and they are shorter than Trent's, so if at all possible I'd like to shorten my time at Trent.

Thanks!

When I was accepted to Trent last year I also had four or five transfer credits. It is definetly possible to decrease your courseload, I think I had three transfer credits in the first semester and one or two in other semesters. I looked into trying to shorten the length of the program and it essentially not possible because the courses are only offered in sequential order according to the standard 'compressed' schedule.

Ahh, that's too bad! But I kind of figured they wouldn't let you shorten the program. Thank you for answering my question though. :) At the very least I guess I'll have a bit of a lighter course load.

How are you making the decision between Trent, Western and Queen's? I'm having that tough choice right now too!

Well, I'm actually getting married this summer, so I am not making a choice just for myself. :) Since I'm going to be in a compressed nursing program, I don't think I will be able to work too much... So for me personally it is more about what kind of job prospects my fiance can find in London, Kingston or Peterborough areas. He has a guaranteed job in Lindsay (near Peterborough), so I will most likely go to Trent since he will be supporting me while I'm in school.

But, if I was on my own and choosing, I think I might be more inclined to choose Western since it is 9 months shorter than Trent. However, that being said I've read positives and negatives about all schools... At the end of the day, you get the same degree when you graduate! So I think it's more a matter of personal preference...what school you like better, which city, how important length of program is to you, etc... It's a tough choice! Good luck choosing!

Does anyone know where Trent places their nursing students for clinical placements and consolidation? (i.e. which hospital or facility)

I'm just curious to know if the courses being transferred are counted towards the nursing degree (in terms of marks)? For example, if I received a 70 in biology during a health science degree, will that mark also be transferred and used?

Thank you!

No, anything they accept as transfer credits appears on your transcript as pass/fail.
