travelling with a fellow RN.. is it possible?

Published

so the time has come where I am going to finally pave my dream and start travelling!!! A few questions do remain tho: My boyfriend - who is also an RN are wanting to travel together.

He works in ortho trauma, while I am in telemetry/medical unit.

Has anyone heard of getting travel assignments together? And would it be too much to ask if we could work roughly the same days?

would some agencies be more helpful then others?

thanks a bunch!

Many agencies will try to work with you on this. You may want to consider mostly larger hospitals/metro areas where there are more travel positions available. The schedule you would need to negotiate with the hospital when you interview - usually easiest to request that you at least match your weekends off since most places do "every other weekend".

yes. i've seen couples travel together. i believe they used cross county or american mobile.

My girlfriend and I have been traveling for the past year together. I work in the CVOR and she works ICU. She works 3 12's / week and I work 8's but our schedule has never been a problem. You will probably have to go to a larger city in order to make it work (we are in Phoenix now), but it can be done. Every travel company that I have dealt with has bent over backwards to help us get assignments in the same hospital let alone the same city. Remember that the companys will do what they have to do, it's all about the money for them. I carry housing and she gets the 1500.00/month housing stypend, she then gives me 600.00 of that and she pockets the other 900.00. We travel to our assignments in one SUV and pretty much carpool. Like today-- We both came to work at 0700. I get off at 3P, she gets off at 730P. When I get off I go to the gym or whatever and go pick her up at 730p with supper in hand. We have it down to a science.

It can work if you work at it. Just go and have fun. Oh, and have either you or her refer the other to the travel company so one of you can get the referral bonus then you can split that too. Hope this helps.

thanks robcod... what is stypend though?

I know many couples that travel together married or not. The problem you will face is the huge possibility of working opposite weekends, opposite days and trust me,it will happen.

My sis and I traveled this past Summer on one assignment . She's nights and I'm days. She and I had separate apts. I brought Mom as well who stayed with me. I saw her 2 days off for that first month. NOT KIDDING YOU! Every day was so funny because we saw each other as long as I came home after the shift and we would catch a burger at Carl's Jr. after I was done with work or she would join Mom and I for breakfast after she was done with work. The worst of it was that we were working 48 hr. committments so it wasn't a cool situation. We were also being paid a lot more than everyone else so we bit the bullet but you know, we wanted some days off together. It didn't happen.

I wish I had a friend to travel with! You end up making more money. A stipend is cash the company gives you to pay for your own rent vs. them paying for your housing. Say you wanted to live in an apt the company doesnt have a contract with .. you take the stipend and pay your own rent with it. Im working in San Diego and I know two friends that live together. The stipend here is 1700 dollars. So one takes the free housing and the other takes the stipend and then its just $850 extra dollars each in there pockets every month! They both work on the same floor too! Good Luck
