I am most likely going to travel nurse this year for the first time but ALONE. Is it difficult to go alone and to meet people?

Specializes in PICU, Pediatric Cardiac.

It takes some getting use to. I travel alone and there are times I wish I had someone to come with me. If you get along with your coworkers at your assignment, find out what the great places are to hang out. Keep a look out for get together or parties that take place outside work..poster or sign up sheets..sign up if it interests you. You may be asked to join. Are you dating anyone?...If you aren't..maybe sign up on a dating site..good way to make friends of the opposite sex.

Great advice Nurspl. I would like to add, when I am a Traveler, there are often other Travelers at the facility and on my unit that I can find a common ground with in exploring the area.

Almost any community has a community interest periodical; it may be in the telephone book, in the local paper, or perhaps you can research it ahead of time on the Internet.

Let us know how you are doing.

I am hoping others, here on the Board, have some other ideas we can all learn from.

HEy all!!

I will be traveling alone, and FAR away from home, so any advice on how to beat the lonlies will help!! Thanks!!!

I just finished my first travel assignment. I was alone for about 1/2 of the assignment. I had no trouble keeping busy. Everyday that you are not working is like your on vacation. Go exploring, you may never see that area again. Just remember to stay safe. Staff was very friendly but they already had there circle of friends away from work.

I was so nervous at first traveling alone but I ended up meeting people where I went. A few of the places I went to had travelers and we would go out together and have a blast!

I would go on tours, wine tasting, cooking classes, etc.

People are usually friendly and frequently you would have something in common with them. If they invite you to go out somewhere, anywhere, take them up on it.

You will have fun. My traveling days were some of the best times I have experienced.

Also, check with your recruiter and ask which places are popular with travelers.

As already mentioned some assignments are going to be more fun than others.

Most of the places I have been I have made really good friends, and been invited out. But at a few contracts this didn't happen. I generally kept busy then with the doggie, the gym and the library.

If you are a highly social person and must must must say go out with a group of people each friday night, this could be a problem, unless you are also very outgoing and in a unit where others are doing this.

If you have anotherhobby plan to continue it in your travel location. Say if you like to knit, sometimes there are groups of peoplewho get together and knit, and would welcome you. Myself, I run, and so the first thing I do is hit the gym and find thelocal running club, I meet a lot of non-medical people, which can be a relief after a rough day!

Then again, sometimes you can just get stuck out in the boonies, where all the nurses are busy with family, and there isnt much to do. So research before you go!
