Travel nursing tips

Published

Hi all! I'm wrapping up the last few science classes and hope to be starting a nursing program in about a year. My goal, after experience, is to be a travel nurse. I do have a few questions though, and I'm hoping maybe some of you could help me.

1. ASN or BSN? I know the trend is moving toward BSN, but I have been told that has been happening for many years. I hear that for travel nursing, experience is desired more than a bachelors degree. If I had to get it, I would get my ASN, start working ad gain experience, and do a bridge, but if I could travel where I wanted without the extra schooling, that would be great.

2. I am married, and my wife and I have three beautiful girls, and we plan on making this a family affair. We have a home in Kansas City with a pretty cheap mortgage, and plan on purchasing an RV for travel, but is this difficult to financially support. I understand that I'll get the stipend since I will have my own housing, but I will have costs at home. We do plan on homeschooling our girls on the road.

3. Any tips for traveling with family? I could use all the advice I can get so that I do this right. Thank all of you for taking time to help!!

Since you are at least 5 years away from traveling, I would suggest you wait to get questions answered about that as your situation can go through big changes in 5 years. As can the market for nursing and travel!

I think you can find lots of discussion about ADN versus BSN and higher discussions in the other forums. I would suggest joining one of those conversations if indeed just reading them does not give you enough guidance. You are correct in that experience is currently more important for travel than degree held. What will it be like in 5 years? I can't guess now. Ask me again in 4 years!

Way to soon to start planning travel nursing as a goal. By the time you achieve your RN licensure.. things will have changed .

If the future holds true, you will be able to travel with one to two years of experience with an ADN.

How old will your daughters be then... how will it affect their schooling?

Baby steps.
