I am in my last semester of nursing school, three more months. As student we hear a lot about travel nursing. I have so many question, is it worth being away from your family and friends for long times, how do you even get on with something like that, are there agencies fro this type of nursing, and do you get to choose where are for how long? See....so many questions! ;)

The first thing you need to know is that travel nursing is for experienced nurses who practice a specialty that is needed somewhere. Because a traveler gets 1-2 days orientation MAX and is expected to be fully functional member of the staff.

Yes, you do get to choose where you go- provided there is a need in that area for your specialty. Most contracts are 13-26 weeks in length.

Thank you Mary Jean! I am still a student, but it seems there are so many things one can do within this profession. I live in a state that gets pretty cold, travel sounds pretty appealing even though it is a lot of work to attain. The leaves here are starting to turn, here comes winter!

Welcome to the travel boards!

I also dreamed of travel nursing all through school. After I graduated, I got a position in the ER , took every opportunity to advance my learning (ACLS, PALS, TNCC, ENPC, CPI... everything!), and then after a year took a position in a very different ER to expand on my skills and experience.

I started traveling at a little over 2 years of experience. Tomorrow(!) is one year since the beginning of my traveling adventures. I've been to the Atlantic and Pacific and everywhere in between. I am lucky to maintain a very flexible per diem position at home, so I'm able to take some substantial time off between assignments to spend time with my friends and family.

I choose my assignments based on where I want to go. I have no debt and very low living expenses, so I'm able to take some lower paying contracts if they're in an interesting location.

Congrats ParalyticAgent for travel done right!
