travel nursing inquiry

Hi! I graduate with my RN in December and I want to do travel nursing in Ohio. We currently live in Charleston, SC, but are about to move to Cleveland for my husband to attend podiatry school. Does anyone have experience with travel nursing that could give me any pros or cons? Do they take new grads? Or would you suggest getting some experience first?

What I do have to tell you, you probably won't like to hear. A travel nurse has to go into a facility and expect NO TRAINING-therefore, you have to be proficient in your specialty. This is why most of the travel nursing agencies will not consider you without a minimum of one year experience in a given specialty. Most want 2 years experience.

For your own sake, do not even think about travel nursing before you practice a year. You will understand what I am saying after you get your first job. The learning curve is too steep that first year and you will be stressed to the max.

Once you are comfortable as a nurse, try agency work (per diem/registry) to get a feel for having to go into a position without training. This will also get you aquainted with different equipment, various policy & procedure differences, commonalities, etc. it is an excellent way to train yourself for travel assignments.

Not a good idea to go into agency work as a new grad. Work a year on a med/surg floor, then per diem work. Agency work is difficult at times, so it can be too demanding of a new nurse without much experience. Good luck
