I have a question. I 've wanted to work in L/d for a while but no hospitals has hired me so far considered I live where there's one hospital that deliver in 40 miles radius of where I live. I have 2 and half experience in ortho/ms tele and renal. I was just wondering if hospitals would hire travelers without experience in l&d and train them for a little while or is that out of the question.
Any help appreciated!

As a traveler you are expected to function independently in the dept. with at most 1-2 shifts of orientation. The orientation is only to learn charting, where supplies are kept and how they want things done, not to learn the skills of the specialty.
Almost every L&D I've interviewed for wants at least 2 yrs. of experience in L&D, some want 5 yrs.

Yeah as a traveler you will be required to have 1 to 2 solid years experience in that specialty. They aren't willing to pay traveler pay to someone they must train, then leave in the middle of the training. It takes 1 to 2 years in a specialty to be considered proficient in it. A travel assignment is roughly 3 months. Sorry, you could travel Med/Surg!

Ha ha! L&D is quite a different animal from working in a nursery!

Labor and Delivery is a highly specialized field that takes AT LEAST 2 years of experience to even begin to grasp the ability to perform and function at 100%. It costs thousands of dollars to train and L&D nurse, so NO---- no one is going to hire an untrained person for a travel job. Good luck, and I would highly suggest to stay in your speciality to travel and if you want to work L&D, then move somewhere to where you can get a foot in the door. Many hospitals would rather recruit and pay the expense to hire a seasoned nurse than to train a new one.
