who transports your babies?

Working on our policy of baby transport from L&D to Newborn Nursery...who transports your babies to and from? As it stands right now, we have nursing students in "nurse externships" who are the only ancillary used to transport babies, along with the RNs. We also have OR techs who don't normally function in patient care roles; they scrub for c-sections. One new tech offered to take a baby up to the nursery for the busy RN and it turned into a big conversation. What would make the tech different from transporting the baby than the extern - neither are NRP certified, but both are CPR certified. Just wondering who transports your babies and what credentials/certifications do they need to have?

BTW we always transport babies in closed transporters, not cribs or with moms because our nursery is 5 floors above us.

Our moms hold their babies or they are transported in open crib. We don't have a nursery anymore.

We couplet, so like CEG, the mom transports in her arms when she's in the W/C, or baby goes in an open crib. Back when I did postpartum and nursery separate, the nursery nurse who was taking care of recovering the baby would walk baby to the nursery with the FOC. It was all on one floor, though.

Transport is done in the crib by parents or nurse. We are only a Level One facility and don't have a well baby nursery....just SCN for babies who are feeder growers or need antibiotics, etc.

From L&D to nursery after delivery, an L&D nurse or, very rarely, a tech. If mom wants to room-in, we don't transport at all.

Otherwise, nurse takes baby out for the first visit, and thereafter, nurses and nursery techs are allowed to transport babies in cribs. If someone from the patient's family is bringing the baby to the nursery, it can be any adult. Picking up from nursery, only someone with the ID band on so we can check bracelet numbers.
