Okay, so I didnt see a speciality forum to put this question in so I will ask it here.
My boyfriend needs a liver / small bowel transplant. He has been presented to the board two times and has been denied both those times. They have cited their reasons as, not enough support (I will be the only one taking care of him after the transplant) and unstable hom (we have lived together in the same home for almost a year....but 4 months at the time he was presented). So, I am wondering if anyone knows how they accept transplants?
His liver is getting worse (last total billi of 8.5) and i have read that liver transplants work best on billis below 3.
So, if anyone has any experience with this....PLEASE HELP!
They give him a year to live if he doesnt get the transplant.

i know i cant provide much help..im not even a nurse..
but just wanted to share something...
..my best friend had a liver transplant when she was small.....
the prospect of her not getting a liver transplant is something i am always thankful never happened...and so i can relate a little with your apprehension.
the wait become more heartbreaking knowing there are more patients than donors, and other complications like yours...
i really do pray that'll your boyfriend will get a liver transplant soon.

I am so sorry for your boyfriend's problems. Can he perhaps petition another hospital? We at All Nurses can't provide medical advice but I do sincerely sympathize with your plight. Please take care.
Thanks for the replies .
I am an RN myself...so I am really not looking for medical advice. I really just want to know if anyone knows about the process in which they choose who gets on the transplant list (i just re-read what i posted and i dont think i asked that directly). I have looked into going to another hospital...but there are several problems with that. One being that the only other hospital that does the small bowel transplant is in nothern cali (we are in southern) and we nee to stay near the hospital for two months after the transplant....problem being #1 money, #2 my job, #3 our kids (we have two 8 and 6 years old).
So any insite on the transplant listing process would be of great help!
Thanks guys!
Okay - got it - now I understand what you are asking and that is fine. Hopefully someone will come along soon with some answers.

Look into the option of living donor transplantation. You or a close relative of your boyfriend can donate a portion of your liver to him, because the liver does the wonderfully majestic thing of regenerating. Yes, the liver can regrow.
BTW my mother received a liver transplantation from Cedars-Sinai Hospital in West Hollywood in 2002. Their service was splendid.
