Transferring in nursing

Published

Hi all, I was getting on this site to possibly find some help. I currently go to Indiana Wesleyan University to get my BSN. I am getting married this summer and am transferring schools to move back home. I am looking to continue getting my nursing degree, but am having a hard time finding schools to transfer to. I am wondering if there is an online nursing program that I can continue online to get my BSN. I am not an RN so I am unable to do the RN to BSN program. Also, if I am to transfer to Ivy Tech and get an associates degree, how will my credits transfer and how much longer would I have to be in school? Any answers will help, thank you!!

Most schools do not accept nursing credits/classes from another school as there is no set curriculum. I've seen some people talk about having a pharmacology course and others have pharmacology built into their other courses (this is just one easy example of differences). Additionally, you will never be able to find a nursing program that is strictly online only for people who are not already RNs- if a person is not already an RN their program MUST have clinical hours. The Board of Nursing has a set number of hours of clinical for each class/specialty a person must complete in order to be eligible to sit for the NCLEX.

Best wishes for everything.

AceofHearts says it. Nursing schools rarely accept nursing courses from other programs and there are no RN programs that are totally online for those who do not already hold a nursing license. Two options are to stay where you are until you finish or deal with whatever is necessary to enter a program at home. I would exhaust all avenues at home before leaving your current program. To find out the policies at Ivy Tech you should consult a nursing advisor at the school.

Good advice from all above. I am a school dean/ director and I do not know of a single school that allows you to transfer in nursing courses from another program. How far along in the program are you? In all likelihood- you will need to just cut your losses and start over somewhere else. I'm sorry it's not the answer you are looking for. Could you remain in Indiana after you get married and have the hubs be the one to relocate?

If you are already in the nursing program it is more or less impossible to transfer.

What this means depends on how far along you are in your schooling. If you are still in the pre-req/general ed phase of school you will likely have an easier time transferring to a new school, and most of your general ed courses should transfer with you. Though you will have to go through the process of applying to nursing programs again, and may or may not be accepted on the first try.

If you are closer to the end of your program and into nursing specific coursework, it may make sense for you to finish out your degree then move home. Not easy, but potentially easier than starting over from the beginning.

As far as online education goes, the only school that offers pre-liscensure education online to my knowledge is WGU. And they only offer this in a few states because of clinical requirements (students still attend clinicals in person). You could look and see if you live in a state they operate in, but you would still have to apply and start all over again.
