I currently work in the float pool at my hospital, and am considering transferring to a unit in the hopes it will be less stressful. The unit I have in mind is pretty chill. They do some medsurge and some surgical recoveries. I guess my question is, is it worth going to a calmer floor to save my sanity? I like getting the different exposure that float pool brings, but my anxiety about not knowing where I'm going to be that day is about killing me. Thanks everyone!

Nah. Sanity is overrated.
Having worked in psych off and on for over 40 years, I can tell you that some of the most interesting people I have ever met lost their sanity.
So, a choice needs to be made: Interesting or sane?
Well, the unit I want to go to is definitely interesting, but I get what you're saying ?

One of the things to keep in mind when transferring into a staff position is that usually there will be some other expectations such as attendance in staff meetings, mandatory staff education, participation in select committees, low priority for vacation time, etc.

The float pool isn't for everyone. You've been working there and if the anxiety of not knowing where you'll be on any given day, it sounds like a very reasonable choice to me to pick a unit that you think seems like a good fit for you. There's a chance that as a float pool member you have been spared from some of the "unit drama" that may exist, but you likely have a good feel for the staff and unit, so if it sounds good to you I think they'll be glad to have you join them. Especially since you're already familiar so you're not like an outside new hire. Good luck.
