Transfer headaches

Today was a bang-my-head-on-the-wall day. I got a 73-yr-old man by helicopter, victim of heatstroke.....105-115 degrees throughout the county today. He was also in a-fib with RVR, which we figured was due to the heat. I tanked him up with 4 liters and he improved, except the rhthym didn't change. He is a Kaiser pt, we are a rural, non-Kaiser facility. Contacted the nearest Kaiser, they wanted us to transfer him. No problem, right?

He came in at 1315. At 1900 I was still trying to find a way to get him to Kaiser. All the ground units in three counties were tied up in MCI's and heat-related problems. I called the Kaiser transport team back to get authorization for air transport, but they refused!!!

I hate HMO's.........

I am not impressed with kaiser at all.

I am comforted to know I have said HMO. They are absolutely amazing sometimes. I was on an EMS ride-along and we got called to a pt having a panic attack and crying hysterically. She had prn benzos for her panic attacks but was out and while the medics were there, she called HMO and they told her to bring herself to the er or they could have her doc call in a refill...based on that she refused transport (knowing she would have to foot the bill) and was still hysterical when we left and had no way to get her meds! Like you said, gotta love 'em! :angryfire
