Training/Orientation Salary

I am in the process of possibly getting my first RN job! Here is a little background:

This job is a brand new position in an allergy/immunology practice located in Maryland near DC. They had been hiring MAs and have a medical student as well. They are wanting to add an RN to the team so that they can make things run a little smoother and make things easier for the doctors. I would be responsible for allergy shots, allergy testing, medication administration per orders, assessments, PFTs, education, etc.

They asked me how much I wanted to get paid for both training/orientation and then when I am fully trained- I said that I was willing to negotiate. They didn't like that answer, so I did a little research and came up with around $25-30/hr. Is this reasonable? My second question is how much is training in a specialty practice usually? I'm not hurting financially, but I don't want to be taken advantage of.

Thanks y'all!

Specializes in critical care, ER,ICU, CVSURG, CCU.

i am surprised they did not make you an offer of xyz.....$s,

depends on cost of living area, in se tex. the amt you quoated is fair.

Specializes in Hospital Education Coordinator.

if this is a new positoin they were probably hoping you would tell them a figure since they have no idea what to offer. I would look at a few hospital job listings online and gauge by that. Every market differs. In my area the clinical nurses do not earn as much as most office nurses, but that depends on many factors. Also, I would negotiate for the same salary for training as for post-orientation, with a 90 day window in which you can be let go if not fulfilling your duties appropriately.
