only top 4 percent?

Published

Hi. I was just speaking with a CRNA and he said that NA schools only consider applicants who were in the top four percent of their BSN class. I'm not sure if that's just this particular area or if this is nation-wide. I've researched several programs but I've never seen this requirement.

So my question is for everyone who is currently a CRNA - is this true for the school you went to? Do you know how prevalent this policy is? I know that admission is very selective but I didn't know it was that selective.

Thanks!

Seriously,

If it were my mother, father, son or daughter - give me the top 1% every time - I want the guy that knows everything, that is cool, calm, collected, and intelligent.

I certainly hope that the schools should be very fastidious about who is accepted and who is not.

Be careful what you wish for. When we assume that the top 1% yields the best candidate that will be the best in the field. I have encounted those that are in that 1% that you speak of that outside the classroom are simply disastrous. Application of knowledge is sometimes a challenge with those that are simply book smart.

Yes - but it is not those I was referring too - there were 3 other attributes (inference to clinical judgment - yes?). I have met very poor clinicians and very excellent intelligent clinicians - ---the former is the obvious choice...The jeopardy contestant(s) can stay in the classroom...

You may ask this person what the top 4% is measuring. GPA? GPA+GREs? Recommendations? Frankly, I think it is a wide exaggeration.

I was probably 50th percentile in GRE scores, and 40th percentile in GPA. I got in, graduated mostly As,good clinical marks, and passed boards on the first try. I will tell you if there was a measurement for motivation and self discipline amongst candidates you should be in the top 10%.

Look at any elite organization and it comes down to mostly motivation and commitment.

Good luck...don't let other people's negative comments deter you.

I would agree with you in the fact that motivation should account for at least 10%. I didn't make it in by my GRE or GPA but from everything else that I had portrayed my motivation to succeed.
