I currently work in a smaller Boston hospital where the top pay on the union scale is in the 40's/hr. I have heard that some of the big named hospitals can go into the 60's/hr? Can anyone confirm this?... I might just plan my future on a hospital with the bets long term benefits.
Also, is it heard to get a job in one of these hospitals after many years of experience because you will be at the top of the union pay?

Union pay is established per state...meaning that not all RNs get paid the same in all the states. Union pay goes by the number of years on the job. One starts out at the bottom and gradully the pay increases as the years go by. The starting union wage for a new grad is no where near the pay an RN with 5 years experience gets; then 8, then 10 etc... A freind of mine makes an hourly in the 60 something range but in my state that requires over 10 years of experience with a night shift differential and OT. Now with OT I easily make it to the 70s mark but who likes OT...it only shoves me into a tax bracket that puts me in pay stub shock when I see it.
In my state the pay goes up in the union I'm in 6 months after starting, then 1 year, then 2, then 5 etc...unless contracts change. Every state is different and not all jobs are required to pay union scale though some non-union places do to compete with the places that are protected by a union.
Some people like unions and some don't...I wouldn't work anywhere that didn't have a some type of union protection. People have very strong views on the unions.

The top of the pay scale for BMC is over $80/hr for a level II nurse. The Brigham is $66/hr for a Staff RN and $72/hr for a nurse in charge. Dana Farber's top pay rate for an RN is close to $70/hr and Tufts is just under $60/hr.
Do you actually work IN Boston or outside of it? I can't find any hospitals in the city of Boston that only go up to $40s/hr on the list of pay scales that the MNA sent me last year.
