Too many people trying to get an ABSN?

Published

Hi all,

I'm taking my first 2 prereqs so that I can eventually apply to the ABSN programs at UofM, WSU, EMU and OU. I'm hoping to be able to apply for the Fall 2011 cohort at any of those schools. Anyway, I was in class last night, we were working in small groups and finished our project and started talking. I discovered that out of the 5 people in our little group, 4 of us were taking ABSN prereqs. And my heart sank. I honestly decided to go for the ABSN because I really want to help people, specifically in a medical setting. I am passionate about becoming a nurse. 3 of the people in my small group were looking for something with "more job security" which is a valid concern, but in my opinion, not the best reason to become a nurse. Right now I feel like I've decided to try and make this life change at a really bad time because there is suddenly an influx of people interested in nursing due to economic forces. But maybe everyone who starts taking their prereqs feels this way.

For those of you who have gotten into a program: Did you feel like this when you were taking your prereqs? And for those of you that are taking your prereqs: Am I nuts or do you feel this same worry? I will try very hard not to get discouraged because my heart is in this 100%, but if I'm being honest, I do feel scared that I'll go through all these prereqs (I have seven to take) and then not get a spot in a program. Ugh.

Any thoughts/advice would be appreciated!!

Lisa,

You need to do what you feel in your heart is right for YOU! It would be easy for any of us to tell you to take chem and bio together... I would. Because I know I can handle it. I have a friend that works part time with two children and she's been taking one hard class and one "easy" class at a time and basically been keeping up with me. Bottom line you need to show the school you can handle an accelerated program. If there's concern, err on the side of caution and do them one at a time. Better than having to spend the money to retake them when you don't get in because of a shotty GPA. And DON'T MAKE YOURSELF CRAZY! Sit down with a cup of hot green tea with a few moments to yourself and look within. That's how you'll get into a program (beyond the A's). Soul-search away my dear!

Don't focus on the ppl that are trying to get into the programs, just focus on u & don;t think to much into things. There are so many obstacles in ppls way and u haven't even applied to a program yet, if u begin getting flustered now it is going to be very difficult for u in the long run. We all know how the economy is, out of 50 ppl in a room 45 are going to say they are going for nursing & that is something u have got to get used to. It is very competative, u may maintain a 4.0 g.p.a & get denied admission into some of the schools u applied to, pick yourself up and apply to more programs. Majority of the ppl u speak to arent going to make it past A&P, then even more are going to get cut in the program. I got admitted to UofM & WSUs SDO programs & they only admit 50 ppl w/ over 500 apps, its up to u to set urself apart. My focus was on me getting in & doing whatever it takes to get there, not how many ppl plan on applying.U have to be realistic by the time u apply it is going to be even more competative than when I applied, but reguardless keep ur eye on the prize and try not to worry about whats going on in every1elses lane. Good Luck!

PurpleRN2B,

SDO program? What's that?

it's the accelerated 1 yr. second degree (bsn) program, thats what my program calls it

It is great listening to everyone so that we feel that we are not in this alone. I have too am a Mom of 3 children- ages 9,7,4 but I am not working now so I am taking 4 pre-req's. I have 3 more left after this semester and will be ready for a program come May 2010 for U of D or Sept for WSU, EMU, or U of M. Becoming a nurse would be a dream come true for me as well and I won't rest till I get there!! JKB1999

try not to worry! I started this fall with EMU and when I was taking my pre-reqs I felt the same way. I did not get all A's and I did get in. I will say that if there is a program that you would prefer over the others then make sure you do everything you can to get into THAT program.

What I mean is for example EMU has a point system. You get points for taking your 8 pre reqs at EMU and they also offer point for working/volunteering in the 6 months prior to applying.

Good Luck to you!!!!!
