TOEFL Exam for foreign nursing grads

World Registration

Hi Nurses and Future Nurses! I just want to share my experience with the TOEFL exam I took this 7/13/2013. I am a Filipino who just migrated to the US after my graduation in April 2013. I am applying for a nursing license in WA and TOEFL is one of their requirements.

The State requires a minimum score of 83 and 26 speaking. After learning about this, I got devastated. I am a person who would rather choose Math over speaking in front of the class. But hey, I got a score of 27 for speaking and a total score of 107 in my TOEFL exam.

What I did was follow the tips from Notefull and also watched their videos on youtube. These really helped me a lot! I memorized their formats and used these on my actual exam. I also answered the free reviewers from TOEFL. then practice practice practice practice .. I even asked my self some random questions then answer. Basically, talking to myself and recording (speaking is my weakest point).

Hard work pays off. So for those who are worried about the TOEFL, try to check Notefull. Please share your TOEFL experience here .. or if you need any help, I'll try ;) Good luck, Nurses and Future Nurse!

Hi! I know this post is 2 years ago but I am just wondering how hard was the speaking questions in TOEFL? Is the format of noteful enough for you to answer all the questions specially the questions 4 and 6?

Thanks. And congrats to you as well.Your awesome for getting that 27 & 107!

I only got 23 in speaking sec and 96 grade on my first try. Wish I put more effort that time.:(

anyway, I wish you luck getting that golden letter of eligibility!

*Almost cried when I received it. Lol.

Grad from trinity university.

Hi! Are you in Washington state or applying for your RN with the Washington BON? I literally just got done with my TOEFL exam today, and have a bad feeling I probably didnt meet their speaking score requirement of 26 for the BON :( .

I know i'm jumping the gun, but do you or anyone know if Washington BON will let you retake the TOEFL exam if you didn't meet their score, or will i have to take an english class??? I've spoken english pretty much all my life, but i've always had a bit of trouble with fluently providing verbal explanations and getting my point across, especially in a crunched time of 1 minute :blackeye:

Hi :D just arrived in WA with my family last May 10 and it's quite comforting to know and see filipinos everywhere especially when we were in Tukwila (if I'm not mistaken, the place where jollibee, chowking and tokyo tokyo are ) :) I've read the comment thread and congrats for those who passed the toefl and NclexRN exam. My husband and I are planning to take those two soon (we need lots of time to prepare though), just like you guys here, I'm scared to take both, haha but more scared of the toefl, how much time did you put for the toefl review? And we graduated as nurses in 2010, what study guide did you use, read for the Nclex rn exam in Washington? Thanks in advance!

Congartulations Nurses!

Thank you so much for these helpful tips. :)

I am a Registered nurse in the Philippines and i just moved here in WA.

I took the toefl test last oct 2015, I finally got my scores and I scored 93 total but speaking 24.

I was so devastated 'cause I was two points away, the testing site I went was so crowded, there were like 20 test takers in one small room and I was so destructed because we were all talkin at the same time.

Now I am scheduled to take the test this nov 13 (I am so nervous Help me God), and my question is that...

Any of you have ideas if the questions are going to be the same? Because I am planning to practice my answers, especially the lecture part (because this was the part that I messed up :( )

Thank you so much and I would appreciate any comment/response.

Good luck to all of us!

Hello po! i just saw you post. How's your TOEFL & NCLEX? í ½í¸Š

Hello i completed my bsc nursing from india.now i am in california.and they want firstly i need to clear my toffel test.can anybody suggest me what can i do now?

Hi,.

If California Board of Nursing is asking for toefl exam then you have to take it. They are probably asking you to go through the evaluation process for your diploma. Is that what they asked you to do? If yes, then you have to ask them if CGFNS is available for the state of California. And then you are going to submit the toefl score to that and they will send everything to your state board. If you need any help with further info, I might be able to give you more information, because I went through the process myself. [email protected]

Good luck

Hey! I would like to know where do you found the table with the minimum scores of TOEFL by state. Thanks.

Hi there! As i was browsing here I saw that you are currently residing here in WA state! Me too! Im a filipino and planning to take NCLEX RN. I took toefl for the the nth time and keep getting a score of 24. :( Btw did you pass your NCLEX? Email me when you have time, [email protected] thankyou!

Thanks

I know this is old post but im curious if they waived your application without the toefl?

alright , I know this is from ages ago , but I'd like to share my experience with you regarding license endorsement and TOEFL.

I have an LVN license from CA (from where I have been working for 3 yrs already) I moved here because of my husband (military) .

I started my endorsement process from CA to WA 3 months prior to moving. When I got here , the DOH contacted me and said that since I'm a foreign Graduate , I would have to take the TOEFL . I emailed them back ., Citing the exception that if you worked a certain number hours , they will waive the TOEFL exam, granted that you can provide a letter from your employer stating that you worked from so and so. I contacted my employer and they were really good about that. The DOH accepted it and waived the TOEFL for me.

Now , I applied for both LVN endorsement and RN application at the same time. I started my CGFNS CES eval few months ago so they processed them both at the same time as well. Again , they emailed me to say that I need to take the TOEFL. (I graduated 2013 btw.) I emailed them to clarify if I still needed to take the TOEFL since they waived it for me already for my LVN (LVN and RN require the same scores) and they told me that since I have not worked as an RN yet, I would STILL HAVE TO TAKE THE TOEFL.

I was frustrated. At that time , I already found work ( found work within a week from getting my WA license) . and I got busy. but then I realized that theres no other way but to take the TOEFL. so I took it yesterday.

I was so nervous. Besides watching some videos from youtube when I have freetime, I did not prepare at all. and just like what other people said,, the speaking part is daunting. I have yet to receive my scores , but I am very unsure about my speaking score. (the timer makes me way anxious to think properly, it is like Ms Universe ) . So ... don't do it like me. Take time to review. there are plenty of free review materials. practice whenever you can. Best of luck to all of us.
