TOEFL Exam for foreign nursing grads

World Registration

Published

Hi Nurses and Future Nurses! I just want to share my experience with the TOEFL exam I took this 7/13/2013. I am a Filipino who just migrated to the US after my graduation in April 2013. I am applying for a nursing license in WA and TOEFL is one of their requirements.

The State requires a minimum score of 83 and 26 speaking. After learning about this, I got devastated. I am a person who would rather choose Math over speaking in front of the class. But hey, I got a score of 27 for speaking and a total score of 107 in my TOEFL exam.

What I did was follow the tips from Notefull and also watched their videos on youtube. These really helped me a lot! I memorized their formats and used these on my actual exam. I also answered the free reviewers from TOEFL. then practice practice practice practice .. I even asked my self some random questions then answer. Basically, talking to myself and recording (speaking is my weakest point).

Hard work pays off. So for those who are worried about the TOEFL, try to check Notefull. Please share your TOEFL experience here .. or if you need any help, I'll try ;) Good luck, Nurses and Future Nurse!

THANK YOU FOR THIS HELPFUL TIPS.? like you, I'm also afraid to take any English exam because English is my weakest. Anyhow, I will update you as soon as I got my result.

Just an update, guys, for all you WA folks out there. I endorsed my VT license to WA (Feb 2014) with no problem. I simply asked my university in the Phils to send over my transcripts to WA, as VT didnt keep a record of it. I included a cover letter on my application stating that VT already required IELTS (eventhough I wasnt really sure that they did, but I did pass the ielts in 2008). I also enclosed a copy of my 2008 ielts and other supporting documents. I reasoned with them regarding the toefl requirement. I ABSOLUTELY didnt want to take it (haha!) I thought they were going to give me a hard time. It was a long shot but I tried it anyway, and crossed my fingers. They approved it about 3 weeks after they got the transcripts. I had to follow up via email a few times. Now the bigger problem at hand is finding a job.

QMarquinez, what hospitals did you apply to? It's been 3 months of active job hunting, to no avail

I recently passed my NCLEX last March 2014 and I wanted to endorse my license in washington. They require me to take the TOEFL exam. I started reviewing for toefl last May (because I was so busy with private matters) and I have a scheduled toefl next week, June 14. Today, I just randomly checked the washington BON website and I found out that they no longer require the Toefl for the endorsement. I don't know if I should be happy or not with this but I will call BON tomorrow just to be sure.

Did they require you to take the toefl? I checked the endorsement form that was updated on april 2014 and it doesn't say TOEFL is a requirement.

Regardless, the analyst will still require you to do TOEFL because you're a foreign grad.

And they'll take a note of the date of your exam.

One way to prevent state hoppers.

Oh, I see. Thanks!

Better give them a call tomorrow. When I applied, toefl was a requirement. But I really didn't want to take the toefl since I already took the ielts. I also finished my BSN in the Phils. And they waived the toefl requirement, much to my delight. I think it's because I lived and worked in the UK for 4 years. They probably took that as a factor. If you ask me, you can still take the toefl as scheduled. They may have changed their requirements but since you already paid for the toefl exam, might as well just go through with it, but still call them to confirm. Best of luck!

Just an update...

I did not call DOH to ask. I just took my TOEFL as scheduled. It was hard, I must say. But I passed. I am so relieved. Notefull was such a great help. :)

So as far as I understand different sates require different scores of TOEFL right? It seems to me that WA is tuff ))

Isn't it weird that I have already passed NCLEX, but because my speaking scores in TOEFL is 25/not 26 or more I am stuck in Wa.:(

Hello! I have the same situation. I passed my NCLEX for Hawaii BON, but I live in Everett Wa. The next step is to take this "ugly";)TOEFL. The speaking section for Wa is 26 or above. The total passing scores are 83. Have you already taken TOEFL? Any luck?

Thank you!

Is this for sure that they need my school transcripts in addition to TOEFL? If I have already passed my NCLEX in Hawaii why do they need that?
