To young to be a Unit Clerk?

Hi there,

Currently I am enrolled and almost finished my Nursing unit assistant course. I was chatting with a stranger in my work place and had told them I was becoming a Unit Clerk and they proceeded to tell me that I was to young for the job and that Unit clerks need to be older than 20 years old. I am about to start my practicum and am extremely nervous about this. Am I to young? I am a super fast leaner, confident, great communicater and feel like I have a good grasp on what makes a good Unit Clerk! All I need is some guidence and training from other clerks. I'm just worried that no one will take me serious because of my age and won't think I'm capable of doing the job. Please let me know if you have any input on this.

I wouldn't worry at all about what they said. Not sure why they told you you needed to be over 20 to be a unit clerk. However, be sure you spell correctly, use proper tenses, and punctuation marks correctly. I don't know if your post was on auto correct or what, but there are several spelling errors. If you are going to do any order transcriptions or anything else that can impact patient safety is is imperative that you be sure you've input the information correctly.

Age is only a number. Willingness to learn and attention to detail are far more important than age.

I wouldn't let the remarks of a random stranger destroy my career plans if I were you. You do, however, as the previous poster pointed out, need to work on spelling and punctuation.

If you are 18 or over and meet the qualifications, you will be fine. Your interviewer can't ask your age, although HR will know because they need your DOB.
