To the nurses who already completed SEC Assessment in BC please help

Published

Please share with me your experiences during your assessment, and how long did you wait for the result? And what are the actual recomendations after you received your result. Does anyone actually granted a provisional or temporary license after SEC or is everyone who took the assessment have to undergo continuing education or educational upgrading? if so, how many months?

I am scheduled to have an assessment on April and I'm a bit anxious what might be the outcome....I might not afford it if ever they recommend me to take further study for moths or years..

Please enlighten me...is it worth to pursue it?

Hi

I have scheduled for sec assessment next week in Mount Royal University for 5 days.I am really nervous about psychiatric nursing.Do they ask me to do triple jump and OSCE for psychiatric also. Those who have an experience about SEC please help me.May God bless you all.

Thanks.

hi raila,

how's your assessment, I'm also scheduled in April. Can you give us some pointers? thanks

hi, sorry for the late reply.I have finished my sec.It was quite O.K.For me SEC in mount royal university for 5 days in all specialities. And don't expect your schedule as u think like first is the written exam and then the practical.NO. It may change. So don't be panic. For me

1.First day there was OSCE for general medical and surgical in the morning and obs gynae in the evening. In that, u will be given a patient ( not real patient but more than a patient the RN will act like a patient). After that u will be given a 7 cards one by one.I mean when u finish card no 1 then they will give u card no 2 to accomplish. Each card there will be a task for example collect history for patient R (that will be card no 1 ).Next is physical examination, then medication administration all route IM, IV, SQ, inhalation etc, wound dressing. All these things u need to demonstrate and the assessor may ask u the reason u do. Evening OBS GYNAE.In OBS GYNAE, same history collection, answering to the acting patients doubt, newborn assessment, and discharge teaching ect. Next is clinical judgement for OBS GYNAE. u will be given a paper with 11 cilinical scenarios one by one u need to read yourself and take ur time to think and then answer to the assessor and she will write it down and she may ask u the rationale for ur action.u can go through the mount royal university website.

2. Second day morning there was general clinical judgement and triple jump.In clinical judgement u will be given a paper with 11 cilinical scenarios one by one u need to read yourself and take ur time to think and then answer to the assessor and she will write it down and she may ask u the rationale for ur action.u can go through the mount royal university website. This is typically the same .And the triple jump is u will be given a case briefly. U need to collect the relevant data from the assessor and make nursing diagnosis and intervention and tell to the assessor. She may ask u the rationale for ur intervention. The same thing in the evening for peadiatrics.(Clinical judgement and triple jump). And mental health clinical judgement. In mental health no OSCE and TRIPLE JUMP.

3. Remainig 3 days there was written exams .One day morning general MCQs, and evening Short answers.U must be thorough about the drug calculations and drugs action and nursing considerations about some basic drugs like heparine, digoxin etc.Next day morning peadiatrics MCQ+ short answers, evening OBS GYNAE MCQs + short answers.Next day morning mental health MCQs+ short answers.

Read CNA code of ethics, CNA CRNE prep Guide other CRNE prep guide if possible.Check the procedures in you tube like how to give IM , IV injections, and Wound dressings etc.

If u need further help let me know.Don't hesitate to ask me.I have no problem in helping others. If u need assisstance in drug calculations please let me know.I will help you.Be relaxed that is more important.Wish u all the best.

hello Raila,

I also did the 5 day sec, but in BC in April 2010. According to your posting you seemed to do very well.

Did you already have your results? I do not have my results yet and a little nerveous since it's been already 6 weeks. If you did get your results, can you please tell how long did it take you and if they requested you to do some supplementary course work. Please also tell where did you get your nursing edu?

Thank you in advance for your information.

Leila

Hello Lizakurt,

Sorry, I didn't have time to reply early. I still have a few days to study...I have many books, just the time isn't enough to read everything but I would like to take supplementary courses so...for me it's better not to do too much on SEC.

How is going for you? Where did you finish the nursing education?

I wish you good luck and... keep in touch!

i finished my nursing back home in the phils. well right now i'm studying too, trying to refresh and review things for the assessment. kwantlen university offers books to review for the SEC and can lend them for two weeks so might as well check that. i've reached a friend who also had undergone SEC and is now going to school as advised by the CRNBC and is told to complete the course for a year. i'm willing to take refresher courses too but hey, there is nothing wrong to be prepared for it,ayt?:) keep it up and i wish u the best of luck too lilyv.:))
