To have a laptop or not That is the question

Published

hi So when it comes to going to uni for the diploma would you lot say its a good idea to have your own laptop or is it ok with your own one???

What would you use the laptop for.

If you use it to take notes unless your a touch typist with fantactic typing speed your going to miss some of the lecture.

Use the laptop maybe to type up your notes afterwards when you summarise the main point of a lecture, these will good a revision notes or even ask the lecture for thier presentation on Disc ( esp if you give them a blank floppy to copy onto) I am always happy to do this.

Also dont forget your going to have to lug the Laptop around + books, lecture notes etc allday, and university are not the most secure places in the world.

Hope this helps, laptops are good tools but are not always the most user friendly of devices.

Final point

If you do decide to use the laptop turn off the sounds they will disturb the other students.

sorry one more thing

Good luck with your studies

I think access to your own computer is desirable, but it doesn't have to be a laptop. If you're worried about missing important points in lectures you can always do what Mike suggested, or have lesson plans/content emailed to you.

If you find you would work better at uni than at home then yes, it would be desirable as computer access is more scarce than books. Alternatively, you could do the majority of your work on paper and then transfer it to disk at home.

This is obviously really commonsense stuff, but you yourself know which way of working produces the best results from you. Again, be mindful about security. Myself and my colleagues did not have laptops and we passed. Good luck with your studies and career.

I have a laptop, I have never taken it into uni, and to to be honest I don't plan to... I am bad enough now reading these threads instead of doing my work, It would be so much worse in the library or in a lecture theatre.

I have a laptop mainly because I live in rented accomidation during term, and then tend to nip home for the odd weekend or for Christmas, and ahving a laptop means it is easier for me to take my work back with me, before I had a lot of trouble with work getting lost on disks, and trouble between my pc and my parents.

Also a major plus for me is that the rom I live in is very small, and a pc wouldn't fit in this room!

Hope this helps, I love my laptop, sat reading emails in bed is fantastic, and it is nice not to be fixed to a desk. The only down side really is the cost, I got a good deal from Currys were I am paying so much off a month.

Love my laptop (Sony with 16" screen). But wouldn't dream of bringing it to class.

Do take it with me when I travel or go on vacation -- it's great for that!

In my case first you have to have a lap to put it on
