To those who are cna's and also going to school to be LPN

I am currently in college for nursing I am 2 hours away from being a full time student. So when I get certified as a CNA how flexible are LTC's when it comes to this. We live in a small town with 6-7 LTC's and 1 hospital so its a 99.9% chance that I will be in a LTC. Also even the 8 hour shifts don't fit because I have school from 8-10:15 and work would be either 3-11,11-7,

Where I work they're very flexible toward nursing students. Can you work 7-7 every weekend?

Yes I could I could even work nights just as long as I get out by 7:15

Most places I have worked have been decently flexible, BUT you need to let them know your scheduling needs up front. Don't tell them you're available any time/shift and then make demands once you get hired (Yes, we just had a girl do this at my facility).

I'm not in school right now, but when I was, I found working nights and weekends the best as a student.

I am in school now, and the two are not compatible for me. School is from 8-4 every day, and there is NO WAY i could work nights because you have to study so much. I suppose if you wanted to you could work nights or weekends, but I wouldn't recommend it. It didn't work out so well for some of my (former) nursing school classmates.

I have a family to support so I need to workWell ju

I doubt you will be able to work without sacrificing your school performance greatly. I saved up for 3 years working as a CNA so i could quit work because my husband could not work. I have been living off my saved money since August.

I'm in nursing school now & the ones who are struggling the most are the ones who are working nights, full time. It is extremely, extremely ROUGH, and honestly, if you don't have to work..DON'T!

But let's be serious, we all have bills lol. One of my jobs ( i'm PRN @ 3 facilities) just offered me a really great position on the weekends, day shift, part time. If you could just work weekends, than that's what I would suggest. Good luck to you :)

I've worked every weekend for the past 2 years as a CNA while in school. Does it suck? Yep! Have I had any type of social life since I started nursing school? NO! Has it paid off? Yes, I have 12 weeks until I am finished with school and I already have a job lined up at my facility where I have worked as a CNA. Most of my other classmates do not. I also believe that I was a step ahead all of my classmates who have not worked in the medical field during clinicals. :twocents:

I agree with those who say that working while in school sucks...but a person's gotta live, ya know? I worked every weekend and two nights during the week. And yes, I was sleep deprived sometimes, but at least I had a roof over my head.

A lot depends on your school schedule. I was lucky enough one semester to have all of my classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays only. Made for a loooong tuesday and thursday, but made working possible.

I work nights (11p-7a) anywhere from 24-30 hours a week, and it's been PERFECT for me with school. But my work is extremely flexible.. I work Tuesday and Friday nights and every other weekend. I have Mondays off from school, so when I work Sunday nights it doesn't affect school at all.. the only day it affects school is Wednesday mornings because I work the night before, but I only have class until noon that day, so it's really not that bad.

I absolutely love working nights and will most likely work them when I graduate if I can't find a day position. I would never go back to working 3-11 ever again.. ugh..
