Tmc?

Published

Hello all I just recently passed my boards and I am now an RN. I was An LPN for a year and a half before this and I currently reside in missouri but I will be moving back to my hometown of Tucson- with that being said I need some info because I was offered a job at TMC working nights and 8,000 relo bonus and 3,00 sign on bonus, they even flew me down and payed for everything the only thing is I keep hearing bad things another thing is the pay is 20.50 an hour plus 17% diff. Now I here that UMC is increasing its wages to 22.00 an hour and they have a 1:4 ratio but there relo is not that great. I think its like 2,000. At TMC I would be on the med/onc floor but I would really like to be in ER. can people who actually work at theses places give me some advice please. Before I send my contract to TMC signed, sealed, and delivered.

I did a travel assignment at TMC last year and loved it, I also worked agency at UMC as well. You can't go wrong with either place.

The med-onc floor is 850's and definately NOT the best place to work! I did clinicals there and on 750's, and it was terrible. :( The nurses are sooo busy and had 6 patients a lot of the times. I didn't meet a single nurse who liked working there-and I spent 2 semesters in various locations (peds, OB, Psych, 750's, and 850's) You're right about UMC, they are increasing their wages by 2 dollars and hour. A friend of mine (new grad) just got hired into UMC ER at 22.50 a month ago.

If you want to live in Tucson, IMO you would be much better off to move here FIRST, then decide on a position.

I heard several nurses who came to TMC by the route you are describing paid their bonuses back to get out of their contracts.

I have heard this a lot but have you witnessed TMC first hand? Is it really that bad? I had my children there in labor and delivery and everyone was great. So again can someone who has actually worked at TMC give me some info or someone who works at another tucson hospital.

I worked at TMC, my mother worked in the ER, and my sister worked there also, so yes...it really is that bad. And like I said, I have spent 2 semesters there as a student. There is a reason the sign-on bonuses are so much....

I have also worked at UMC, and found it to be a heck of a lot better of a place than TMC. Sounds like you are set for TMC though, so good luck!

What is it that is bad? Is it the nurses, equip, pts. etc.when I went down for the student round up everyone seemed really nice so what gives? I really like UMC also so there are choices

I recall at least one Tucson hospital was osteopathic. I thought it was TMC.

I certainly, by no means, know everything about TMC. But, if the floor you are going to is the 850's dept, then I can tell you that there are better places in Tucson to work. The floors are carpeted, they have people constantly moving carts, beds, stretchers down the halls. It is always filled with people, it's dirty, the nurses were very, very far from kind, they were overworked.....basically, it's a messy, busy, dirty place. The charting is expected to be done in the room with the patient and you have to move this incredibly large and heavy portable computer into each room when you give meds. There is literally no room to breathe, move, or work. And to boot, the nurses had 6 patients a lot of times. Many nurses work there and stay, and may seem fine. But when I ask them would they recommend I work there they always say no. St Joes, UMC, Northwest...these places are by far a better place to work. Again, just my opinion. If you didn't get in at UMC, then I'd recommend Northwest next. But, if you are interested in oncology or ER, then UMC is the tops.

Don't fear TMC too much. I know of people who work there and love it. It seems as though every year a new thread is started about the short-commings of a different hospital; last year it seemed to be Northwest Medical Center. I know people who absolutely hated it there and other who love it. The year before that some people trashed Kino and St. Joe's.

Like other's have said, it really depends on what floor you work on and the dynamics of that floor. Many positives of a job come directly from your co-workers. If you get a great group of people to work with then some of the undesirable aspects of the job just seem so small and likewise, a bad group of co-workers seems to magnify all of the relatively tiny negatives aspects.

Bottom line: There are plenty of positions open at other hospitals, yet some people still choose to stay at TMC 'cause they like it.
