Tired of being called lazy...

Hi Everyone,

Please don't bash me...but I need to get this off my chest. I am a nursing student working as an aide on Med/Surg. I work hard and am constantly on the run making sure that my patients are taken care of. I rarely leave a mess for the next shift and I take pride in my work. My complaint is that often I hear nurses complaining about lazy aides. I know they are just talking about the "aides" in general....but it makes me upset. I usually ignore it and continue on with my job....but it is something that sticks in my head.

Any other aides feel this way or am I just too sensitive?

You need to tune this griping out or you will get stress-related illness. Everyone could be a little or medium-sized angel and the same remarks would be made because it gets to be a habit. Don't act as if they are talking about you. If you do as good a job as you say you do, then, they are talking about the slackers and you know it. Concentrate on the tasks at hand, and let the conversations go by you unless someone is specifically addressing you. And thanks for taking such good care of your patients.

Yes. I always feel as though the complainer is painting us all with the same brush, even when I know they are only talking about a specific person (usually you can tell who it is!). Especially when they add a little disclaimer saying that our job is hard and blah blah blah. It's like, "don't patronize me!"

Fuzz, there are as many lazy aides as there are many lazy nurses. You're going to find them everywhere. You know that you do an excellent job, and there are nurses out there who know you do an excellent job. Just do what you have to do and don't pay any attention to what is being said. good Luck

Don't worry about it. As long as they are not directly talking about you, they are just making a general statement. There will always be someone in this industry who will not like you or your work, not matter how hard you try. But you cannot take it to personally. Thicken that skin miss, and don't let the little things get to you. There will be bigger things to do that in this field. Just know that you give it your best everyday. Besides, you are not there for the nurses to recognize you, you are there for the patients. And I assure you that if you are doing a good job, the patients will see it, and (to me at least) that is all that matters. The nurses rarely will tell you how good of a job your doing, and will only really speak of your work if something was done wrong. So if nothing is said to you, take it as a job well done.:yeah:Good luck to you.

I understand what you mean. Sometimes it hits a little close to home when you hear a nurse complain about lazy CNA's and they forgot to ___....espcially if it has been a busy day and perhaps you forgot to do something as well! lol I wouldn't worry. As long as they are not talking about you directly, don't let it bother you. They are just venting. You know your own work ethic. Funny you should mention lazy aides in this post. I could write more than a dozen stories about CNA's complaining about lazy Nurses. There are just as many lazy CNA's as there are lazy Nurses. Don't take it personal.

Let it roll off your shoulder.:D

Yea dont let it bother you. As long as you know that your patients are safe, clean, and everything else, then you are okay. If you dont like the way the nurses talk, then take them aside personally and ask them if they see any areas of improvement or if they think you are doing a good job. Open the line of communication and get it flowing. This is probably why the nurses are talking about lazy aids, is because there is no line of communication :)

Tampa I agree with you. Although most Nurses know how to tell the difference between slackers and hard workers, some do not. I used to hear a nurse complain about a particular CNA who was always last to finish her section. One day I got pulled to her section and it took me until 3pm to finish AM care on everyone! Her section had 7 hoyers, 5 dependant's with a two person transfer and 4 showers daily (2 of which were stretcher showers). When the nurse tried to give me *** about not having AM care done by 11am like everyone else, I did not hesitate to explain why. It wasn't until then that she realized that she was out of line & the permenant CNA for that section was not a slacking or lazy, she was overworked & needed help. I never heard that nurse talk badly about that CNA ever again. As a matter of fact, she seemed to gain more respect for her aides after our talk. The section was broken up so that she only had 4 hoyers and 2 showers. (I know, whoopdie doo! lol) If the other CNA would have communicated with the Nurse, she could have saved herself a lot of hard days and trash talk!
