Tips to find jobs in CA (SF area)

Nurses Career Support

Published

Hi.

I'm currently in nursing school, living in NYC. I'm graduating this August, and will be moving to CA (SF area) at the end of this year. It's not easy to find jobs in CA from NY. Is there any nursing magazines that I can subscribe for job posting in CA?

Also, if I take license in NYS, how long will it take to endorse to CAS lincese in CA?

Any advise will be greatly appreciated.

Any reason you have to go to SF? We need you in Northern Nevada and we're a much nicer community.

You can actually do a walk-thru at the CA BRN office in Sacremento and get a temporary license that day. :)

BTW, I was told that the job market is not as good as last year for the new graduates. In your opinion, is that true? I plan to take NCLEX around October here in NY, and moving to SF area on December or so with my family. What should I do or where should I start in terms of looking for a job (new graduate training programs). I would like to start with Med-Surg to gain experience. I'm sorry for asking many questions, but I'm very much worried and lost to look for a job in a new place.

Thank you in advance.

Out of my nursing class, we have all had multiple offers at just about any hospital that we wanted in whatever specialty that we wanted. I do not know of one single person that didn't get what they wanted, and they all got their choice of shift they wanted. As compared to last year, I don't have any idea about that, but I think that it is safe to say that you can easily get a job here. Most new grad programs are in July and January. For me, I started putting my feelers out in February of this year, and started getting job interviews and offers by Spring break.

As for locations - do you plan on moving to San Francisco, or outside of San Francisco? There are lovely cities outside of SF as well. PM me - I will be out of town for a few days after tomorrow.

Uh .. No.

In California we have a thing called the ratio law, where hospitals can typically only assign five patients per nurse.

It pretty much doubled the demand for nurses overnight. Instead of a previous projected shortage of 40,000 nurses by 2010, the state now estimates there will be 100,000 vacancies ... mostly because of the ratio law.

I live in SoCal and attend a small community college. Recruiters are offering cars, down payments on houses, errand services to do your grocery shopping ... all kinds of wacky things. No signs of a softening job market here.

The only problem you would have out here is if you attended Excelsior College (which is based in NY), which the state no longer accepts. Other than that, as long as your school meets the BON's cirrculum requirements, you should be fine.

This is a big relief. Could you kindly tell me any headhunters (job agencies) that you used...

Thank you so much.

I don't really use job agencies out here. The hospitals pretty much come to you. My school sponsors job fairs where most of the recruiting is done. And, from what I can see, the hospitals do most of their own recruiting. They don't use agencies for new grad hiring.

Just call hospitals in the area where you want to work. That would probably

be the best way to find employment.
