Times to repeat course or re-enter program

I have seen several posts in the past where students mention that they have failed a course and therefore are ineligible to return to the program. This seems to be a very strict policy. I am a nursing instructor, and at our school, students may fail one class, but if they fail a second class (either in the same semester or in another semester), they are out of the program.

I am curious what the policy is at your school.

At my program (BSN), once you fail the 2nd course you're out of the program. Definitely lights a fire under the ones in jeopardy of being dismissed.

At my school you are only allowed to fail a course once...but you have three chances to pass your medical dosage tests, 2 chances to pass your pharm tests. Ifyou fail any of these a final time regardless of how well other things are you are out...as for clinicals...if you fail it you are out as well...tough times in michigan area schools

If you fail one course at my CC you are out of the program. I think it is mostly because they only offer each particular course once per year and all the higher courses require the one before it before you can take it. It is actually like that with all the allied health science classes at my CC. They will give two chances to remidiate for failed tests(below 77) but if you don't pass one test you are out of the program. They will also not allow anyone in the nursing program if they have failed any nursing related prerequisites within the past 5 years to enter the program.

You can only repeat a failed course once. Fail another course and you are out. However, I am hearing that even with the chance to repeat a failed course, it still has to be decided on by the committee. One person that withdrew from the course earlier this semester because they were failing the exams was denied re-admission for fall. Another person is being allowed to come back so I'm not sure how they are making the decisions about who gets to come back and who doesn't.

We can fail one course... the second fail is the boot.

But we may petition to go before the board, state our case, and get back in.

If we fail after that, we are completely done. All options exhausted.

I'm not sure how they are making the decisions about who gets to come back and who doesn't.

I don't know, but would be very curious to know, myself.

I do know, that if a student must go before the board, that student better be able to state: what their problem was, what have they been doing to fix the problem, what they will continue to do to prevent a repeat of that problem and why they wish to continue.

Common sense things: taking ownership, not whining, not pointing fingers, no teacher bashing, no crying "but it's my dreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeam!".

I think they want to see good sound thinking and self control!

But... if there's more, who knows.

It could just be like playing Apples to Apples... it depends on the judge.

In our program

If you fail any of the nursing classes or co requisite course you are out of the program. You are eligible to reapply to come back where you failed out. So if you fail out 3rd semester, you sit out 4th semester and then may get to join the lower class in 3rd semester. If you fail a second time you are out and have to reapply and start over. If you fail a co course 2nd semester and its offered in the summer you can take it to make it up.
