Timed test anxiety

Hi all!

I am just about to embark upon taking the TEAS test to finalize my entrance into my first choice of nursing programs (May 7).

I've always had a problem with test anxiety... especially when the tests are timed. With the added stress of only having one chance to pass this test, I'm afraid that even with proper preparation, I might still have problems.

Any advice out there for managing your time when taking timed tests that are so crucial?

I totally have test anxiety and a learning disability and I will have to say that the TEAS was a challenge for me. I preferred to take it paper and pencil over on the computer. I would ask which one you would be taking.

I found that for the math section, you really need to be up on your fractions, know your math skills at the drop of a hat! You get almost 1 min per question and it really is not enough time for some of them. Go through them and get the really quick ones out of the way and then go back for the second round that will take you more time. Last do the ones that you really have to write down and figure out. The math section was really challenging for me because it was timed and I have a visual processing problem that causes me to read the numbers wrong. If I get a min to really look at it then I am good but in this case, practice your math skills!

The rest of the test was pretty easy, the English comprehension and spelling section was a breeze if you speak English as your 1st language. The science section was a variety of interesting subjects, study the earth science and physics questions!

Even though I am not a good test taker I was able to get a decent score. Just be prepared as much as possible and take your time when you do get it!:up:

Honestly, I know there are tons of relaxation techniques...and all through college I tried and tried and tried...but they NEVER worked! My doctor who I finally took the time to explain everything to...(I'm nervous whenever I'm timed or rushed with limitations)...gave me a prescription for itty bitty little .25mg Xanax...I took one before my test (about 2 hours before), and it was SO amazing...I felt great!

I only use about 10 of them total every 3-4 months...I keep them as STRICTLY an as needed basis....but they work great! I have been a CNA for 9 years and decided to go into nursing school...and it was a SHOCKER to the system after being out of school for so long. So I recommend it...the deep breathing and stuff like that works...but when all else fails talk to your Primary Care Physician.

If you get an Rx, just remember to give it a "trial run" BEFORE the date of the test. I am supersensitive to meds and even a tiny amount of Xanax would make me "out of it". :bugeyes:

Just a heads up, if you do have a verified learning disability and still have all of your paperwork go to your school's disability office and ask if they have any test modifications for the TEAS. I was just recently diagnosed and my school offers me additional time for test taking and the use of a calculator on tests where they're not normally allowed, but they don't require the TEAS test. However, the school I want to attend does require it so I have contacted the learning disabilities department to see if they offer any modifications since doing a google for Learning Disabilities and ATI TEAS pulled up a few colleges that stated that they offer a modified testing environment for their students. I don't know what modifications are standard though. It may just mean taking it in a quiet room with no other students, but it never hurts to ask.
