time and 1/2 for hlidays?

I work at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, which is, as part of a state university, a state-funded tertiary care center. We get time-and-a-half for working the holiday, plus "Comp time" - meaning that if we work the holiday, we can take a paid 8-hour day off sometime within the six weeks after the holiday. If the time isn't taken off within six weeks, then it is paid out on the next paycheck after the six weeks has expired (as regular pay) -- so in effect, if you work a holiday, you get 8 hours of regular pay, plus time-and-a-half for the hours you do work. I *DO* expect to work holidays, but I also expect to be compensated for it, too. When you join the military, you give up several of your rights as a regular citizen. You should not have to give up rights to be a nurse!

Before I graduated from my nursing program and started working as a nurse, I worked at the hospital for six years as a medical transcriptionist. It worked pretty much the same way, except the "comp time" was paid out differently because it was under a different union contract.

Sorry if my explanation is confusing - it took me a while to understand the whole "comp time" thing.

I am a CNA at a mid-sized hospital. I work per diem, and as a result do not get many holiday hours, but when i worked over this last New Years I received time-an-a-half for it (which was good seeing as how horrible one of the shifts was!).

We have six paid holidays a year, if we work, we get an extra 25% of base pay. These are part of our combo time, and on 12 hour shifts we can take 2 weeks vacation. The first year, you can acrue 2 weeks vacation, and 2 weeks for the holidays. At 5 years, it goes to 3 weeks plus, and at 10 years, it's 4 years plus.

Unfortunately, if you are off sick, you don't accrue anything, sick or combo time.

maybe you should have your employer look at the holiday policies for the veterans administration hospitals since they are government entities. when i worked there we had 13 (i think that is the accurate number) paid holidays per year and sometimes congress would vote for another one.

this is so true.

i worked at a county hospital and we had 13 holidays. we worked 8 hour shifts. we had a choice on a holiday. if we were scheduled to work we could take time and a half or take a straight day's pay and then 8 hours of "comp" time which would be added to our vacation bank. even if we weren't scheduled to work on a holiday, we were still paid for a straight 8 hours (no comp time choice) for staying home and enjoying ourselves.

there are actually 11 federal holidays. but the friday following thanksgiving day and christmas eve were also holidays making our grand total thirteen!

where i am currently, we make time and a half on holidays. if we're not scheduled to work a holiday we have a choice of no pay or adding 12 hours of pto to our paychecks.

The nurses at the hospital here get time and a half for holidays...and the vacation time builds on itself...6 hours every two weeks. I'm a nursing student here so no idea about which holidays they get overtime for.

We get 10 paid holidays per year. In addition we get time and a half if we work the holiday. So essentially we 2-1/2 times pay. If I were told I was expected to work straight time I would quit immediatly.

Holidays where I just started working are paid at time & a half. Nursing is not like joining the military--the hospital does not own me. I am expected to work my share of holidays, but I will be compensated extra for it.

BTW our hospital doesn't pay time and a half for holidays either. This really surprised me the only job in my life (except military) that didn't pay at least time and half or double time. I know McDonalds does lol.
