I work at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, which is, as part of a state university, a state-funded tertiary care center. We get time-and-a-half for working the holiday, plus "Comp time" - meaning that if we work the holiday, we can take a paid 8-hour day off sometime within the six weeks after the holiday. If the time isn't taken off within six weeks, then it is paid out on the next paycheck after the six weeks has expired (as regular pay) -- so in effect, if you work a holiday, you get 8 hours of regular pay, plus time-and-a-half for the hours you do work. I *DO* expect to work holidays, but I also expect to be compensated for it, too. When you join the military, you give up several of your rights as a regular citizen. You should not have to give up rights to be a nurse!
Before I graduated from my nursing program and started working as a nurse, I worked at the hospital for six years as a medical transcriptionist. It worked pretty much the same way, except the "comp time" was paid out differently because it was under a different union contract.
Sorry if my explanation is confusing - it took me a while to understand the whole "comp time" thing.

undefinedundefined does anyone working in a hospital setting get time and 1/2 for holidays? i don't just mean nurses. we asked that this benefit be considered, and the response was to compare nursing to joining the military, you should expect to work holidays. thanks for any input
We have six paid holidays a year, if we work, we get an extra 25% of base pay. These are part of our combo time, and on 12 hour shifts we can take 2 weeks vacation. The first year, you can acrue 2 weeks vacation, and 2 weeks for the holidays. At 5 years, it goes to 3 weeks plus, and at 10 years, it's 4 years plus.
Unfortunately, if you are off sick, you don't accrue anything, sick or combo time.

maybe you should have your employer look at the holiday policies for the veterans administration hospitals since they are government entities. when i worked there we had 13 (i think that is the accurate number) paid holidays per year and sometimes congress would vote for another one.

this is so true.
i worked at a county hospital and we had 13 holidays. we worked 8 hour shifts. we had a choice on a holiday. if we were scheduled to work we could take time and a half or take a straight day's pay and then 8 hours of "comp" time which would be added to our vacation bank. even if we weren't scheduled to work on a holiday, we were still paid for a straight 8 hours (no comp time choice) for staying home and enjoying ourselves.
there are actually 11 federal holidays. but the friday following thanksgiving day and christmas eve were also holidays making our grand total thirteen!
where i am currently, we make time and a half on holidays. if we're not scheduled to work a holiday we have a choice of no pay or adding 12 hours of pto to our paychecks.
