Tidewater Community College 2013-2014 Nursing

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hey everyone, I would like to start a new thread for all the nursing students who got accepted into the Tidewater Community College Beazley School of Nursing 2013-2014. I will be starting in the August cohort and would like to meet some of my future class mates. If you are in another cohort, please add to the thread and we can all share information. Best of luck to everyone who will be nursing students this fall and spring!

Frankie911 I sooooo know how you feel. I too was in your shoes last year. I applied for a cohort to start back in august last year and I was an alternate. Everyone tried to tell me how great that was since the program is so competitive however I felt horrible. Put it this way, they didn't say no and you didn't get that letter saying unfortunately you didn't get in so don't be discouraged. I wasn't called in as an alternate but a few people were ( one person was called the day before so be prepared). I went through the whole process of getting insurance and physical , went to orientation provided all paper work to get let down again. so what did I do, I applied again and I GOT IN !! That was the best feeling. To make it after all my hard work was wonderful. I am in the last week of clinical for 130 and will be starting med/surge after spring break ( Nur170) Gave my first injection which was awesome. DONT give up ! You can do it. I am a single mother of two and I work and go to school full time. Nothing is impossible. Best of luck and blessings to you . Please keep me posted. Feel free to inbox me if you have any personal questions :nurse:

Hi Nurseinthemaking. Thank you for responding and for the wonderful words of encouragement. I find myself sitting here, yet again, waiting for "that call" to come to pull me off the alternate list for the March 2014 Cohort. Beazley email says the "next big update for alternates" will be between March 7-12, 2014 - so while I am not holding my breath (need a break from the let downs) - I do hope the call comes. I have reapplied for the fall 2014 cohorts of August and October. I am in no way giving up - it has been a long hard journey thus far, but I know it will be well worth it in the end. I was hoping to not have to wait so long (august, october) to get in, but it is looking like that is where I am heading. It was difficult to attend the mandatory orientation, order uniforms and skills kit "just in case" you got the call - then to not get the call...aghh. I hope you are doing well with your classes and I wish you the best of luck through the course of the program. You sound as though you will make a fantastic nurse. Best of Luck

What did everyone get on their HESI??!?!? I want to apply and am curious what scores y'all are getting on the HESI?? The minimum is 45% to apply but I sure as heck don't think a 45 will get you in.

I just applied and I got a 90.57 on my hesi

Well, I sure hope that this fall I get to see you on campus. Classes are going well thanks for asking . On to mother/baby in two weeks. So excited but nervous at the same time ... I know the waiting is hard but you will make it ...keep me posted

Hi!

I'm new here. I applyed for Fall 2014,still waiting for the results. I believe we should know by the end of this week.

Those of you who are already in the RN program at TCC,could you please share your experience. I read lots of people are being failed,is it true? I have good grades, but English is my second language, so I'm not a fast reader. I notice lots of people here have children and have jobs,so I'm hoping it means it's doable and there is enough free time to study between clinicals, lectures, and labs. Please share. Thank you.

There is a lot of reading so be prepared. It is a 6 credit class in 6 weeks. We have great instructors and they do not want to see anyone fail. Stay on top of the reading, study PowerPoints/lecture notes, and do assignments early to stay ahead. Teamwork with classmates is very important. Will be your second family for almost 2 years.

Bumble B, I am starting NUR201 next Monday, so I've been in since August 2013. The courses are fast paced (8 weeks each), the instructors expect you to come prepared for each class and there are group projects. I work full time and have a family and am doing well in the program. It is possible, but you HAVE to be determined and self motivating. Reading 10 chapters is normal for 1 test and generally we go over material well before it is ever tested. Clinical time is not the time to study, you really need to focus on the experience. If you are like me and learn through "doing", this is where you will "learn" what you are taught in class. Individuals who fail out do so for various reasons. The standards are set high so getting less than an 80 on 1 test out of 3 tests could have a negative impact on the overall grade. Keep in mind that most of these classes only have 2 or 3 tests and 1 final that make up your entire grade - the other work is simply pass or fail. Some instructors will give "extra points" in their course, but don't get used to it. I know many students in the program that have English as their second language, and they are doing great. Don't stress too much, once you are in for a couple of weeks, you will get the hang of it. Best of luck to you!! Maybe I will see you around.

Hello everyone:) I have a question for anyone that is currently in the program now...Does TCC consider the program to be full-time program or not? Wondering if anyone has had problems getting full aid or getting the full BAH( if you are on the post-911/GI Bill) b/c of how the program is structured. The credits don't look like they add up to 12...but the time spent is def full-time. Just wondering since ill be on the post-911 GI bill.Any comments would be helpful!

Thank you guys for sharing your experiences,it's very helpful to me. I have one more question,please...I already have a degree,so I'm allowed to apply for bachelor's at ODU and do it in concurrence with associate at TCC. Now,this is what I want to know: if everyone saying that associate program on its own is already super busy, is it possible to do both in one. If I understand correct my associate classes would be same as yours plus I would have additional classes online for my bachelor degree. Has anyone done it??? Please let me know how hard it was. How many hours per day will I need to study. Any information is appreciated. Thank you.

Thank you, Regina.

I can't believe you also work full time?! It makes me feel better about my situation: I have small babies. I have 100% support from my husband, but with little ones out never goes according to plan, there's always something going on. So I'm hoping if you can do it while working full time,I should be able to do it too. My biggest fear is to fail and have nothing to show for the 7years I worked so hard for to get to this point. I also have opportunity to do bachelor's degree at the same time while doing associate, but I wonder if it's way too much to handle. What do you think? Do you know anyone who does it? Is it something worth considering? I like the idea of having done in less than 2years vs 4years,but is it doable??? Thank you.

I am applying July 15th. Hopefully I get the acceptance letter. I have a gpa of 3.6 but taking some classes over the summer that will bump my gpa a little higher. Anyone else applying this summer for spring 2015.

Bumble B,

I know several students in my cohort who are doing the concurrent enrollment and doing well. You just need to be a motivated person to stay on task and get assignments/ reading done ahead of time. This first year of the program is extremely busy. The studying is nothing like what you have done in the past. Everyone says the same thing; it is all applied knowledge and critical thinking. It seems easy enough but you have to change everything about the way you think and study. I am starting the concurrent ODU program in January. They have changed it so people can take that program even if they do not hold a bachelor's already. The applicant must have all their pre-req's completed before beginning the program though. I have heard good things about ODU's program and Janice Hawkins told me that it is very different than what we are doing for our ADN at TCC. Best of luck to you Bumble B - if you really want to do both programs at the same time DO IT! You will never know until you try. Worst case scenario is that it is too time consuming and you have to put a hold on the ODU program. (which you can do) Enjoy what's left of your summer because once this program starts you won't have any spare time.
