Thoughts on these job offers please!

Specialties NP

Published

Hi all,

I just graduated my AG-ACNP program, and have these 2 offers on the table. I am in the South.

Job 1

Pain Clinic - working 5 days/week 9-5, expected to see 15-20 patients/day, no procedures. Two other NPs in clinic who will provide training and support, clinic owned by Anesthesiologist. Job approx. 1/2 hour away and I know doctor and staff very well already due to their affiliation with hospital I previously work in.

Salary: $104,000...no benefits of any kind, paid as independent contractor so will have to pay my own taxes, insurance, DEA, etc...

Job 2

Cardiology Clinic - working 5 days/week 8-5, and one weekend/month on call to round at hospital (they said these days are 8-12 and only for rounding). Three Cardiologists and one other NP, orientation and training provided by the physicians. Job approx. 1.5 hours away. Expected to do hospital rounds in the mornings, see patients in the clinic in the afternoons, and also help with consults. In the clinic will be seeing 4-5 patients initially, and once out of orientation and comfortable will be expected to see 8-10/day. Also responsible for supervising stress tests after being trained properly (have to do 150 monitored by cardiologist before doing these alone).

Salary: $85,000

Paid Malpractice Ins.

Licensure reimbursement

CMEs $2000/yr

4 weeks PTO + 13 comp days for weekend rounds

401K with matching

Health Insurance (tier plan)

Job 1 I am in the process of negotiating, Job 2 I was told is handled by the hospital's HR and negotiation is unlikely.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks

Update! I decided not to take job 2 due to commute time. I would've spent 3 hours a day commuting for a total of 212 miles per day. This ended up being a deal breaker for me. Job offer 1 is still on the table but I honestly have my doubts about working in a pain clinic. It is a legit clinic and I've known the anesthesiologist and have worked at the affiliating hospital with him for years. Guess I just imagined doing something else. I am still job hunting but jobs are scarce in my area.

#2 hands down. Paying your own EVERYTHING adds up quickly. I agree with Beth that there is much more room to learn and expand your skills, and you would fall under a hospital umbrella insurance policy, 401-k, retirement, long term/short term disability etc. Overall you're more likely to get better plan options when there is a large corporation negotiating them, than if you go out and seek your own private plans.

BirkieGirl, thanks for your response. I actually decided against job 2 due to commute, 3 hours in my car each day would be too much for me.

Update!!! Job 1 is still on the table. I've been talking back and forth with this doctor trying to negotiate things. We're still in the process and it's timely, but I feel it's worth it to obtain a more reasonable deal.

Original offer: 104k, no benefits.

Negotiation Progress: Agreed to pay my , 2 weeks PTO, bonuses (he mentioned the amount depends on what the hospital gives them each year).

Asked for $5 more an hour which will bring salary to a little over 114k (he says this seems doable and he'll get with his office manager and get back to me Monday).

By the way, the local hospitals in my area are starting new NPs out at 94k plus benefits-the norm is 4 wks PTO, $1500 CME, 401k w/matching, health/dental/vision on group plan.

What do you guys think?

Specializes in allergy and asthma, urgent care.

That's definitely better than the original offer. Is health insurance an issue for you? If so, that's going to cut a lot out of your salary, so keep that in mind. Also, will you now be considered an employee of the clinic or still a contractor? Will he pay for your DEA and other licensing fees?

BCgradnurse, I will still be considered an Independent contractor but I'm on my husband's insurance plan. No other fees included as of yet. I would prefer a W2 job but it's looking like I may have to take this job. I have met with my CPA to discuss all the tax implications and she has advised me on quite a few options. Thanks so much, will keep you posted :)

Specializes in ICU + Infection Prevention.

2 weeks pto... That is high school degree level compensation

SummitRN, this is an independent contractor position that originally came with nothing but the stated salary. I realize that this offer may "suck" to a ton of people. I live in the deep south, jobs are scarce. If you look back at OP you'll see where I actually did some negotiating with this position. I'm doing the best I can.
