Thomas Jefferson FACT Program

Published

Hi.

I have been accepted into the TJU FACT program that begins in May but the orientation isn't until a week before classes begin and I would like to get a better idea of the scheduling. I know it's 5 days a week but does anyone have some more specific info? i have to arrange for child care and transportation and a general idea of the class/clinical hours would be helpful.

also...anyone else out there starting the program with me in May?

Does anyone know the PDA software for Blackberry's that we need? I have a Curve (did not buy the iphone cause they said it wasn't compatible). I tried searching for the software on the jefferson bookstore site, but couldn't figure it out. Also does anyone know about the iphone compatiblity? I am still debating on the iphone because it's what I really wanted.

We need Unbound Medicine: Nursing Central, a 1 or 2 year license. You can check out compatibility at their website: http://www.unboundmedicine.com/store/nursing_central_pda_wireless

Went to Jeff today to retry on the scrubs (im picky and it was madness monday lol) - and ended up coming home with them (was surprised since we were preordering monday) made me just a tad bit more excitied to start!!!

But to recap we know we arent getting any choice in our first clinical..but they didnt say anything about the rest? Does anyone remember the name/email of who was telling us this Monday? I really want to email and ask because even though FACT controls our time/wallets for one year...I do have weddings in october/november..and paying 250 to reschedule clinicals does not seem fun.

Im also curious as if they will take our location into consideration when planning them? This was one of the things I liked about Jeff over Drexel ACE!!

I'm not sure who gave us this information. Was it Beth Ann Swan? You can find her email in the faculty directory. You can also email Nikki to see who would be the best person to contact.

I doubt they take our location into consideration; but at any rate, I'm not counting on them doing so.

To anyone who missed the program Monday, you need to contact the bookstore to find out how to order your scrubs. Supposedly, we need them for the day after orientation.

Hey, everybody, check your Jefferson Banner account. My financial aid "award" was there when I checked yesterday. I put "award" in parentheses, because it's not an award, just a confirmation that I am eligible for $12,500 in Stafford loans. Exactly what I was expecting. I don't know why they call it an "award"! Your mileage may vary, of course.

Woah, that is more "aid" than I expected. I haven't filled out the MPN yet. I was told they can determine the award without it but cannot disburse it until the MPN is complete. I am still overwhelmed and don't know which company to go with. Do you mind if I ask which one you chose?

Thanks, E

Pianitra, I can't tell if you are being sarcastic? Did your "aid" consist of "here are the federal loans you qualify for", like mine? :)

I planning to apply through T.H.E. and Discover:

Hi,AtomicWoman

I also plan to apply private loan. What's the advantage of THE and Discover loan compared to other loans from local bank? How about interestes? Do we pay interests immediately after graduation?

Thanks.

Discover i know has a lot of good rewards- like 1% decrease in interest rate if you graduate. I think most student loans have a grace period of 6 months when you don't have to pay. But you technically for most loans you are "paying" interest from the very beginning because it starts accruing day 1.

I was being sarcastic about the federal loans. I guess it doesn't quite come through on the post. Anyway, thanks for the info. So, you aren't going with Jefferson lenders, how did you decide?

I had hooked up with T.H.E. last year, when I was supposed to start the other BSN program at Jeff. Even though I didn't start the program, I liked T.H.E.'s customer service. They actually answer the phone and answer your questions. :)

For others who asked, T.H.E. is the Stafford/federal part of the loan (i.e., $12,500), and they are in turn hooked up with Discover for the private part of the loan. I like Discover's 2% graduation reward. :) Frankly, I wish the entire loan could be a Stafford loan, but it's not to be, so I have to do both kinds of loans.

Any other questions, fire away.

Oh, and I did get my credit report and FICO score, just to make sure nothing was inaccurate on my credit report, because the private lenders will look at it to make their decision. If any of you have not done that (or if you need your parents to do that), you can go to:

http://annualcreditreport.com

You can get your 3 credit reports for free once per year. You'll have to pay for the FICO report (Something like $7.00).

So I also got my financial aid "reward"... which leaves me with a decent portion of the tuition left to pay plus all of my living expenses for the year.

I had planned on taking out a private loan through Chase, but wanted to borrow more than what the school decided my budget for the year should be... my personal living expenses with bills is going to be more than what they said, especially since I still need to pay a portion of the tuition out of whatever private funds I take out.

Apparently, the school will only approve a loan up to the budgeted amount (Chase, PNC and most of the other educational loans require you to get approval from the school). I think this is pretty ridiculous... apparently the budget is created for "the average student" living "the

college life" if you will. Therefore, we can only certify loan amounts up to your budgeted amount." He recommended 2 places to try that do not require school approval, but the one I do not think even exists any more given the current economic climate.

Has anyone else had a similar situation or if you need to take private loans have you figured out a way around this?

Thanks!

I agree that the budget is not realistic. I think the independent student allowance was something like $17,000. Are ya kidding me? Who can live in or near Philly, pay rent or a mortgage, eat and do everything else on 17 grand? Also, the transportation budget was way out of line. $600 to commute 4 or 5 days a week for an entire year??

I don't know whether the numbers they use are set by a governmental agency or come from some other source, but I feel for you. I don't have any reallly good suggestions and I'm hoping others may have other sources for you. One thing I hope you DON'T have to do is put expenses on your credit cards, because that can really become burdensome to pay back. And heaven forbid you are late on a payment and they raise the interest rate to 29%!
