i have picked up on some terms as i have been working my way threw each and every thread and response in all 19 pages of this forum. i am very new to corrections, in fact i never even gave it consideration in all of my 20 yrs as a nurse. i have interviewed at our local county jail, and have interviews for our local fl state prison for women and also our local state prison for men (across the road from the female prison).

i have seen words like:

the hole (maximum security???) is that right?

bullpen- what does this refer to?

drunk tank- sounds self explanitory i suppose

disp.- what is that?

i read that "incident reports" (i think) were referred to as 1033, any other numbers that are universal in the practice of corrections? can anyone clarify this? what does your compound call an incident report or a varience?

how many have been propositioned or have seen the male masterbating?

i am not afraid to venture into corrections and would feel very safe with the c/o's present.

so tell me some new terms or words that are specific to correctional nursing and their meaning, so i can build my vocabulary and also know what is been said in orientation, as to not appear stupid.

thanks in advance for your help. this is a very important matter to me, because i want to be 100 percent successful and at least know what my coworkers are talking about, or what it means without asking to many newbie q's and appearing stupid.

Clarification......my friend is detention deputy not an inmate.. hahaha. I realized I made her sound like frequent flier into the jail system or something.

Beware of chi-chi's. (Or whatever your inmates call it.) I've seen (and smelled! *L*) some pretty wild recipes.

What is it? Well... it's sort of a prison pot-luck, usually mixed in a bag, and features ramen noodles and whatever other odd commissary things people add in -- cheese, soy sauce, tuna, hot sauce...

i have been working in a prison for almost a year. i also work in a county jail. i work prn in both but hold part time hours between both of them.

lets see...

at the prison we have a bull pen. its a huge cell with bathroom. it holds many inmates at one time. when we have insulins come up (there are 58 of them) this is where they are held and we call them one by one.

i dont know what a drunk tank is... at the jail we have a holding tank and thats where new inmates come that have been recently committed (just seen by the commissioner or just got sentenced in court and are waiting to be seen my medical for their intake screen. they are also put in there after they see medical... awaiting to be escorted to their cell.

disp. - i am not sure... maybe dispensary? at the prison we have an east dispensary and a west dispensary and this is where we hold chronic care clinics and sick call.

i have been propositioned at the jail quite a few times and at the prison too. and yes... at the prison i have encountered masturbation quite a bit. i justs act like i don't see it... don't comment... and keep on going.

Has anyone mentioned rainbow meat... mystery meat?

Rainbow meat is actually a meat they get that looks like different colors from different angles. Mystery meat is self explanatory. They don't know what it is! :)

Now I have heard about the rainbow meat. Found in both the nasty looking bologna sandwiches they get at the county level espeically if they are sent out to work and get a bag lunch. Turkey on the federal level. It's some kind of irradiation process from what I've heard that creates that rainbow shimmer. As for the greenish bologna I'm sure it's something best left in a petri dish. hahahah

Speaking of food watch out for bannanas if you work with female prisoners. The female housing units here only gets sliced bannanas since the whole ones were getting brought back to pods and you can imagine what happened from there. Some ladies were creating medical issues for themselves if you know what I mean.

:roll I see you know about that NASTY meat. That is exactly what they are talking about. That nasty rainbow shimmer (perfect word!!) Mystery meat is a square piece of some type of unknown meat. It could be chicken, fish, or something else (this is at the prison) Its seems like everything at the detention center is turkey or fish.

As far as the females...they are a trip. We had a girl that kept going through fixodent for her one tooth partial. I mean a tube in two days. Once of CO's found a glove with the fixodent in two of the fingers... fixodent hardens when its left out. Ugh... the things they come up with!

jack mack.......a VERY common thing bought in the commissary. something i have never seen anyone buy or eat except when i have worked in the prison systems, but i know it exists outside of prison, cuz i have seen it on the grocery shelf ha ha! who else buys it but inmates??

well in a grocery store, i think it is called jack mackerel...but in prison lingo it's simply jack mack. the inmates liked to mix it in their ramen.

OMG that one made me laugh oh man, I know quite a few both detention and patrol deputies. Your fixodent story beat all of them.

I will have to tell some of them to watch out for that one, no one would think twice about fixodent and glove. The ladies in our local jails haven't done this one yet.

They did figure out something with washcloths and cardboard tubes but now fixodent whew. To much to think hahaa. Oh some of them are so ingenious I wonder what some could have been or done if they had chosen a different path other then crime.

Oh bless you I don't know how some manage to work there other then you are truely called to do it. Such heightened sexuality all of the time.

I started a PRN job at the prision last week. It took me forever to firgure out what a jacket was. The comment made was "do u have Mr. "jones" jacket?" I was thinking why would I have someone's jacket. Then they told me a jacket is what we call medical charts. That was a new one for me.
