thinking of withdrawing fundamentals 2nd semester

Published

I am also at end of 2nd semester and i am thinking of quitting. My clinical instructor wants me to because i am too slow on paperwork, but fine everywhere else and doing well in theory. For some reason she does not like me. I have not given her cause to dislike me. She is a lot younger than me, if that makes a difference.

I heard teachers pick out people they don't like, is this true...?:scrying:

Yes, it is true that some instructors pick out people to make life difficult for, but that is the way it goes throughout life. It is your responsibility to fight back, do what you are supposed to do the way you are supposed to do it, and get past this roadblock. Don't give your instructor the satisfaction of knowing she made you quit. Get it together. See your advisor and find out what you can do to survive this. Good luck to you.

DO NOT GIVE UP!!!!!! Teachers definitely pick students they are not going to like and will do EVERYTHING in there power to make that student miserable!!! Don't give in to that!!! This is your future, your life, your dream...don't let anyone take that away from you! Don't show your weakness to this instructor, just keep on going to class, doing your work and proving to yourself (and to her) that you can make it to the end!!!!! Never let anyone make you quit in life, you only quit if it is a decision you make on your own!!

Good luck and I hope it all works out!

Please do not give up. You would be satisfying her ego if you quit. Do not let a simple human being like an instructor crush your dream. This is the reason I do not entertain petty talks with my instructors. I demand respect because I do what I am told to do. I am a senior nursing student who believes that some instructors are very miserable at home and so the only place they are empowered is on the clinical site. I keep away from nursing instructors at all times; they can be very evilous! My God always move them out of my path. Pray my dear. You will be delivered soon. I will be praying for you.

I don't think i will be able to pass clinical and if i don't pass clinical, i don't pass class, even though i doing well in theory.

Everything i do she criticizes me on. I don't know what i did to her . Maybe i am too old to be a student (52)

I don't think you're too old to be a student. I'm in my first semester of nursing and just turned 51. I would estimate that close to a third of our class are over 40! I worry more about the age thing when it comes to finding a job, especially after reading all the posts on this site about graduate nurses not being able to get jobs.

Don't give up....you worked to hard to get to this point. Use the skills you have learned from life and get it together. Do whatever it takes to get through.

I really want to encourage you to stick with it if things are as you have described. If you are truly doing well in all other areas of your class and clinical work, I am surprised that your instructor has even broached the subject of dropping out with you. In my experience, it is your test scores and/or class and lab participation that is the basis for an instructor talking with a student about actually leaving the program - clinical performance is important, but the importance of paperwork is less than that of gaining confidence with patient care at this early point in nursing school as far as I can tell.

I'm not sure what the teacher being "a lot younger than me" has to do with your complaint. I'm older than all but one of my nursing school teachers to date, and the youngest was the best classroom instructor of all so far. What does age have to do with this? Either she is a good instructor or a bad one. And either you are a good student or a bad one. I suggest examining the situation very closely before making any inference of age discrimination. Not because it isn't possible - it certainly is. But it is the exception rather than the rule, as far as I can see. Even younger instructors tend to appreciate older students because most of us don't try to ******** them or call daddy to intervene when unsatisfactory grades pop up towards the end of the semester.

Are you averaging 75 or better on tests and graded assignments in all classes, showing up prepared and with a positive attitude for all class and clinicals, and doing what is asked of you with assigned patients in clinicals? If the honest answer to those three questions is yes, then you really may have a problem with a biased instructor. If that is the case, I recommend an appeal to someone higher up. If not, I recommend you take a few steps back and accept that no matter how old you are or what you've seen or done, there is something to be learned from the instructors who have chosen to agree to teach us and the nurses who have earned the degree we don't yet have.

Just my two pennies.

Yes i am doing well on all tests, assignments etc. I am good with pt but too slow with paperwork. I know she is biasis, never friendly too me or make conversation with me.....I want to ask if she thinks what area in life i would be good at.......I have been a professionaly secretary for many yrs but when back to get a BS from Univ of IL (which is no easy feat in itself) in Comm Health (did not work using that degree). I don't want to go back to being secretary though......

I never missed a class and was always positive, she always makes me feel inadequate........

The average age on my nursing program is 35. We have students age 20 - 58. So no, you are not too old. Have you scheduled a private meeting? You could ask her to lay out EXACTLY what she is expecting from you and EXACTLY where she believes you are lacking. If she can't do that, she may back off. BEST OF LUCK!

I believe everything you have said, and I hope I didn't come across as judgmental. I'm rooting for you!

: )

Can you give some examples of things your instructor has done that made you feel inadequate?

Right now i feel there is no kind of hope for me.................I have always heard this is always hope but in this case i don't , esp with this particular instructor......i have to decide withing 24 hrs if i can going to drop or not because i have a test in theory tomorrow when i am doing well in, different teacher too
