I'm a student nurse. I don't know much. That much I will agree.
But already I sometimes say ewwwww!
Like when I watched a nurse change an ostomy bag bare handed.
Medicine cups that hit the carpet and roll, roll, roll around. Get picked up, stacked up and used.
Dyna-maps and (and glucometers) that get rolled in and out of isolation rooms, and never get cleaned.
EWWWW!
What's the grossest thing you've ever seen?

The other day a nurse I'm precepting was helping hold the legs of a pt while I cathed her. When I was through and we were cleaning up the contents of the foley kit, this nurse gathered up the betadine cotton swabs that I had just cleaned the pt's labia with, WITH HER BARE HANDS!
Well, I should have been more clear.I meant what is the grossest thing you've ever seen a NURSE do?But EWWWWWWWW...those posts I read!
Ahhh, I see. :) I (so far) have been fortunate to have not seen too many gross things done by nurses, but here's one from a couple of months ago:
I was donating blood at the Red Cross and the RN was having some trouble finding my vein, so he ripped off his glove WITH HIS TEETH and held it in his mouth and then proceeded to puncture my vein without a glove on. I know that I don't have any diseases, but how does he know that?

Today one of the students in my class said she was putting a foley in a lady. She's new at it so she accidentally put it in the lady parts. The nurse proceeded to take my friend's gloves...turn them wrong side out and put them on!
She then finnished up the job with the same foley!!!!

Well, if you're going by the book that is a major no-no...but you will find out real world nursing is not like the book. We do have some nurses who try to do everything by the book. They inevitably either adapt to the real world or leave with a disillusioned attitude.
Even still...I can't fathom turning someone else's gloves inside out and using them on myself...YUCK.
The grossest things I have to do are digitally remove feces and change female catheters.
Second grosses is change colostomy/ileostomy bags.
These things just turn my stomach but I've realized you can do some amazing things when you are strapped for money...

To make a long story short, I was in the ER one night as a patient...well, the ER nurse stuck me for an IV and was shocked to see blood run all over the place...down my arm, pooling on the floor, all over her gloves...she looked at her glove and then made a 'slinging' motion over the garbage can ( a regular can, not a biomedical hazard can or anything), and slung the blood all over the can, the wall, etc...I'm just a student, but I have to say that was pretty gross...what if I had some kind of disease?
