Things I wish I would have known...

Published

Hello all,

I wanted to start this post as a place for us to ask questions as Pre-Nursing or Waitlisted students. As a place to ask questions or to seek a perspective on a specific course, study technique, or just to share information and advice if you are a seasoned Nursing student.

Have a blast!

So I will go first. I am taking Micro205, Com225 and NUR158 (12 credits) at MCC in the upcoming semester, while working 4-8's. I have been putting Micro off for a while now knowing I had plenty of time to complete it but also because I am super intimidated by it. Now, I am taking it with an instructor that I have heard marvelous things about, she only uses her own notes that she writes on the white board and the MCC lab manual.

My question for those who have taken Micro at a MCCCD school: What do you wish you would have known before beginning this class? Am I just psyching myself out... it just SEEMS like a lot of material for this one class. Is there anything specific I should review from 181, 201 or 202 before the beginning of the semester? Can anyone offer study tips for this class?

Thank you!

Things I wish I had known... How to use the search function on a web forum to find TONS of posts just like this- before posting my own.

(I know, I know- snarky :p )

I anticipated a respone such as this, I didn't expect for it to come so soon!

Gosh! Thank you for this valuable information. Where would I BE without your insight.

For me micro was all about memorization. I recommend using quizlet or flash cards.

Microbiology was kind of a beast of it's own. I had a really good teacher a PCC and it went really smoothly. If you are going to review anything, I would recommend the various cells and their structure and function. Know the eukaryotic vs prokaryotic vs fungal. Most of the material really stemmed from that and everything branched off of that information.

If you did well in 201 and 202 study just as hard in 205 and you should be ok. I took 205 last semester at MCC with the instructor it sounds like you have and I thought it was easier than 201 or 202. Write down everything she puts on the board and memorize it. The 2nd exam and the final lab practical were the most difficult items of the semester.

In my opinion the class is like any other biology classes just focusing on one area. For lab. Read the manual a few times to understand the process. Also, if you are not familiar using a microscope than spend the extra time getting to know it before the midterm.
