I'm a 29 yr old mother of three and I am a first year nurseing student. And i've been told time and time again that the nurseing part is very hard to get into and that they only take the top people.cDoes anyone have any advice for an old foggie meaning i'm not young anymore and that means it is worse for me. and on top of that i've been out of circut for along time. any advice would help thanks so much.

Yeah I just asked. I guess they used to do it by GPA at my school to, and then some one threatend to sure for discrimination (at least that is what I heard) I really wish they would change it back though, I would have a better chance of getting in then, it is at this point a garrantee I will be put on a list, and for many years. 290 people applie and only 20 got in. So there are a lot of people on the list allready. Some one told me that they were not going to even take applicants next year, but I am sure that is a rumor. I hope! They say that is is not the class room time that is a problem but that they do not have enough clincal teachers. I say stop making the state pay $100 million a year to medicare so old men do not have ED and give it to nursing students/ clinical teacher hires. If they baby boomers are freaking out about nurses so bad then they should stop the budget cuts in the schools!
Well our school just got the budget approved to be doubled in size... graduating 90 a year to 180 a year so we're all pretty happy about that. Everything is so impacted, it's ridiculous!
And back to gerri: I thought I would be the only older one as well abd was surprised to find that is not the case. When I went to the counselor, embarrassed because I almost flunked at UC Davis 12 years ago, she told me she'd be more worried if I had graduated from there suma cum laude than if I flunked out, the latter being the more "normal" thing. Though there are some younger folks in my classes many of us are older and in similar situations which only makes us empathize with each other more!
Take it easy, you are going to be just fine. Many times critical thinking ( big in nursing school) comes easier to those of us who have been around the block a few times. I am 41 years old and while I did have to readjust to studying, the rest was not as bad as I had been told it was. Besides if nursing schools only take the best and you are accepted then guess what, that makes you one of the best. Don't forget to breathe. Hang in there Treeta
