I am not sure if this has been talked about before, but I do believe there still is a nursing shortage...sort of....
It seems as though there are lots of jobs, but lots og jobs for nurses with experience. No one wants to hire anyone new it seems! Therefore so many jobs are open leaving places understaffed and the shortage is perpetuated!
I have applied for tons of things online. I have gotten NO replies! My only hope it to sub as a school nurse in our school district. I am also studying for my coding certification.
I had a recruiting agency call me today based on something I applied to. They told me on the phone that they have jobs al over the country, but nothing for me b/c I only have one year of experience. All of the jobs they had wanted at least 2 years experience if not more.
So how do you get experience if no one will hire you?????
Excuse my typos! I am typing in the dark!

I feel your pain. I have 5 yrs experince mainly in hospice and STILL cannot land even a med surge job. And I agree, the so called "shortage" is self made by the hospitals. All nurses have med surge exp right out of school and it is a great place to start and then transfer within the hospital to something else later. Problem is non clinical HR people are the ones weeding through the applications. I know from asking several nurses at different hospitals here in the Columbus OH area that it is who you know. You need to find a way to get directly to the unit manager who is doing the hiring. I am fortunate in that I have some connections that I have recently utilized to help me, so we will see if that works.
