The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) vs The University of Texas at Tyler (UT Tyler) PMHNP programs?

Just got my acceptance email from UT Tyler and have a interview with UTEP next week for the Spring 2023 semester. I would appreciate input from anyone that has experience with either of these programs. Thanks

I haven't really studied with anyone, but I think some others have met up on zoom to review for tests.

I'm full time, looks like I should finish one semester ahead of the part time students.

I'll be graduating Spring 2023 and found the following courses the most challenging either because of how much I studied or based on people who dropped out:

Clinical Semester 1- people didn't write substantial papers and Clinical challenges are 6 hour exams that need you to be thorough but fast too. People often didn't finish then on time.

Psychopharm & Neurobiology- I had study groups for all major didactic semesters like these two. Some of our Blueprints were 60-90 pages long. Study Groups are worth it and save you time. 

Assessment- the exams are tough and doing a good 45 min-1 hour head to toe assessment is not easy to do. Practice your assessment on camera and do it over and over again. 

Also, if you ever make less than 90% on a test, you should go to office hours. I always talked to the professors about my first exams to understand why I missed key questions.

I would say most of the professors are good at explaining concepts and then providing outlines/blueprints/key points to know before every exam. In addition, the rubrics for papers and projects are very detailed, so you know exactly how much information they need on a specific section. If you follow the rubric or create study guides that follow their outlines, you will do fine. Grading is also usually has a 7 day turnaround and if there is a delay, the professors will let you know why. Overall, I thought the program and the professors were great. My friend went to UTA and she seemed to have way more issues with assignments, grading, and just overall very picky professors. Her experience convinced me UT Tyler would be a better choice and I don't regret it.

That is so great to know. I was torn between UTA and UT Tyler. I've heard the same things about UTA NP school so decided to apply to Tyler. Do you have any pointers on preparing for the program?

Camille. I can't think of anything other than having a computer set up with at least one or two extra monitors connected to your laptop. The way the final exams at the end of the program were set up felt like being a tele-health provider. You need to have at least four pages open in order to have the resources you need on a normal evaluation: DSM-5, psychopharm reference like Epocrates, your patient note, and then your "patient case". I needed extra monitors to be effective.
