Hello,
I've been unemployed since June-July, up till now. I thought there would always be a need for nurses. In the 80's hospitals were recruiting like crazy, talking about the nursing shortage and what not, and then we started seeing hospitals recruite nurses from the phillipines.. But that was more than 20 yrs ago, and i'm unemployed now so what happned to the nursing shortage?
I was wondering if anyone else is also having difficulty finding a job. I don't know if it's because my preference is to work in hospitals limiting the number of places i can apply to. But yet when I apply to home health agencies and nursing homes, LVNs get hired over me.There are about 8 hospitals around me and ive applied to all that fall within a 30 mile distance from my city. They keep on telling me the census is low and recently, since I have such a large gap in my work history, i think that affects my employment.
I'm qualified to work, so I'm just wondering if this is nationwide, local or just a bad time? Also, any advice would be greately appreciated.
If you are replying to me, thank you. I might try the unemployment office to see if there are any open houses. I suspect things are run differently depending on the state or what have you...I do have a part-time job right now. It's good to have some money coming in.
This is to you and anyone looking for a job. If you have a part time job. Great. Maybe you can find something to supplement your current job and or find a better one. What the heck give it a try. I am doing the same. You never know you may hit the jackpot:).
My advice network, network, network in my part of the world it is not what is listed down on your application , although a BSN is minimum level for consideration...however if you know someone who knows someone who works at the facility you are interested in working in you will have a definite advantage and you need that advantage...recently my large hospital had a RN job fair and only 30 openings...however had over 700 applicants.
jayra,
I've been an RN since '84 and am currently job hunting. I made the mistake of resigning from a f/t job for a Home-based contract position. Unfortunately, the agency I was working through didn't get the contract. So, while job hunting and no reliable car I took a retail position within walking distance to support myself and my teenage daughter. I renewed my license, but need to re-cert BCLS/ACLS which I plan to do in the next couple of weeks when a class opens up. I have over 9 yrs working Psych and the rest ICU and Tele. Feeling very frustrated. Thought my experience would be an asset!?!

Go to your Local unemployment office and see when the next job fair is being held.
You pay taxes. Make these people work for you.
