The test of a lifetime

Nursing Students General Students

Published

Well, tomorrow bright and early, I get to take the ACT to see if I can actually get into college. I feel like an artifact taking this test at 31 years old.. Hopefully I get a high enough score to get in. If not, I will be simply crushed. I have wanted to be a nurse ever since I was 4. My Grandma was a NICU nurse back in the days when the big babies had a hard time surviving. I am not sure how I am going to handle college, but I have survived worse and I am ready for a challenge.

If/When I pass the test, I have 2 years of regular college coursework, and then 2 and a half years of clinicals at Bellin College of Nursing. Have any of you heard of Bellin? I would like to know if it is a good school. It is hard to find a good nursing college here in WI, so I kind of have to take what I can get.

Well, wish me luck, and thanks for listenin',

An option: if you do not do well on the ACT, consider starting your education at a community college. You don't need an ACT/SAT score and you can transfer to a university after 2 years.

If I had to take the ACT/SAT again, I think I would freak!! LOL...and I scored a 1360 on the SAT's when I took them in my senior year (13 years ago). But I don't think I would do NEARLY as well if I had to take it again!!!! :roll

Unfortunately there is a 3 year waiting period for the ADN program at my Community College. I have 4 years left to use my GI Bill and there is no way I am going to let that kind of financial aid slip by without a fight!

This way I can get into school ASAP and get my BSN a year earlier than if I would have gone the Community College route.

Either way, I think it costs me about the same...

Thanks for the reply,

Jen

Jen,

Have you talked to an admissions counselor? Generally, they do not make "non-traditional" students take the ACT.

Also, you could take pre-req's at the community college. I'm sure there are no waiting lists for that.

Also, if your ACT scores are not high enough to get into your chosen BSN program, find out if you can be admitted to the school as General Studies, Pre-nursing, or Undeclared. Then take the pre-req's, ace them and get in despite your ACT score.

Good luck!

The program I am taking is strange. I was actually told that I needed to take the ACT to get in. The first two years I am at Lakeland College, and the other 2 and a half I am at Bellin College of Nursing. The program I am going to apply to is Pre-Nursing. The diploma that I get is from Bellin College of nursing which requires all of their students to take the ACT. For the first two years I have a local commute, which means I am available for my kids (ages 3, almost 5, and 9) When I am done with the 2 years of classes at Lakeland I have to drive for almost an hour to get to clinicals in Green Bay. ( I just LOOOOOVVVE being in Sheboygan, WI  ) but the kids will all be in school full time and my husband can field the calls from the teachers. I just hope clinicals are in the daytime, otherwise, schedules will have to be re-arranged.

Wish me luck.

The planets almost have to align for this plan to work.

GOOD LUCK JENNIFER!!!!!

I know several Bellin students.....and they have always had good things to say about the program.

I hope the stars are in alignment tomorrow!! ;)

Thanks, I needed that.

Time to study a little and hit the sack

What is the minimum ACT score you have to earn to get into your nursing program?

I took the ACT when I was a junior in high school. I did very poorly on it and I am glad my nursing program didn't ask for it.

Well, I took the test, and I swear, I thought I got a big fat ZERO! Turns out I got a high enough score to be accepted!!! :nurse:

I start classes the beginning of January! I can't wait....

Hooray for me!

Thanks for the positive thoughts....

Congrats, Jen!!

When I first got this strange urge to go to nursing school (at the age of 35  ) I went to an open house at the school I ended up enrolling in. There a lot of young girls there with their MOTHERS. Somehow I didn't run out the door, and I'm so glad I didn't - it's now the home stretch of my 4th semester and I'm absolutely loving it - I just soak up everything I can, and I'll be so proud when I finally have those letters after my name.

Best of luck to you - it's the adventure of a lifetime!
